China blasts lake, HP on edge
NEW DELHI: TV reports say Chinese authorities have conducted a series of controlled blast to release the water of the artificial lake into the Pareechu river. Till now there has been no visible rise of water level in Sutlej, according to reports. Experts had anticipated a sudden flood as soon as the water was released.
The entire area along the banks of Sutlej and Spiti rivers in Himachal Pradesh was put on maximum alert on Thursday following a communication from the Centre that overflowing water from a lake had been released into Preechu river in Tibet, threatening flash floods. The water was likely to reach Rampur on Indo-Tibet border by evening, Chief Minister Vir Bhadr Singh told reporters. The areas along the river banks from Sumdoh in Kinnaur and Koldam in Bilaspur have been put on maximum alert. The communication from the Centre said water had been released into the river, Chief Secretary Kanwar Shamsher Singh said adding that the entire state machinery and other agencies were fully prepared to face the situation.
