'Bum bomb' : the new threat to travel (and others)

Air passengers face full body X-rays after suicide bombers hide devices INSIDE their bodies

Quote:
Air travellers could face even more intrusive security checks amid fears that Al Qaeda is planning a terror campaign using suicide bombers carrying explosives hidden in their bodies.

The body bomb threat was revealed after the tactic was used in an assassination attempt on a Saudi prince.

Quote:
The body bomb method was tested for the first time by 23-year-old Al Qaeda militant Abdullah Hassan al-Asiri, who got through several security checks with military grade plastic explosive in his rectum and detonated them during a meeting with the Saudi anti-terrorism chief, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef in August.

Quote:
In a video, released last month, al-Asiri, one of Saudi Arabia’s most wanted terror suspects, is seen showing off the 3in-long bomb.

He had travelled on the prince’s aircraft and spent 24 hours with his guards without being detected.

Quote:
Intelligence chiefs feared it was only a matter of time before terrorists would try the kind of methods used by drug mules to evade airport security.

The dilemma is that explosives inserted into body cavities like the stomach or rectum, or even implanted surgically, cannot be detected by regular airport checks.

But draconian and potentially costly measures such as full X-ray screening or a requirement for all passengers to hand in electronic equipment that could possibly be used as detonators would cause chaos and massive delays.
Quote:
The bomb is believed to have been triggered by a signal from a mobile phone text message.
Quote:
Security experts are considering isolating the electronic trigger by risking the wrath of passengers and insisting they hand over mobile phones, iPods and other equipment for the duration of the flight.

Gruesome. It will take all day to get past security checks now with this news. I haven't seen any news on Indian TV but I could easily have missed it.

As they say - hell hath no fury like your local, global jihadist with that rather large chip on his shoulder.

Aisha - was reported 2 weeks ago internationally.

Little tin god airport security person- "Excuse me sir, is there a bomb up your arse?""

Traveller - "Is there a bug up yours?"

Giving up your cells and ipods is a small price to pay in return for security I guess.
Hopefully it will also remind the masses how peacefully wonderful it is to stay disconnected.

Cheers

You can see how up to date I am in this neck of the woods, Brisso! I have only just got SkyTV and finally BBC World in the last 10 days which might explain why I missed that news. I gave up on the cable one, was hopeless for me and it didn't have BBC which I do like looking at.

There was a story a few weeks ago, of which I forget most, but the salient features were a person with a bomb up their backside, an explosion, and an intended victim who was barely injured at all, as the bomber's body absorbed the entire blast.

Bummer, eh?

There is no such thing as security, and if you think there is: get real!

homeland security across the pond - a friend of mine tells me... put their gloved hands up his arse at immigration - circa 7 months ago.

the practice has been on for quite sometime now... on landing - havent heard about it being done on departure though.
they're just making it official now - for which they need a 'legal' story = public green light.

I can imagine if the detonator went off but failed to set off the explosive, one would have trouble sitting down for a while.

That was in Saudi, where the guy had a mobile phone bomb up his khyber pass. Yes, didn't hurt the intended victim too much, but the theory is, that if they went off in a pressurised plane, it would be enough to bring it down. I read the bumb bomb fella was blown into pieces though.

Come to think of it, I think my bum bomb blastee might have been the Saudi Ariabian security minister. Possibly.

<Sorry, Matthew... Crossposted.>

Anyway, I bet his clothes needed to go to the laundry as the bumb blaster was carried out in small pieces.

Brishti... they have been doing "internal examinations" on people suspected of carrying drugs for a long, long time. I expect the TSA have been clammering to be allowed to do it, as in, "Oh, Pease?". So now, if they are doing it, we can just sit back and await the inevitable headline, "TSA subjects nine-year-old to anal examination".

Cynical? What, me?

Do we get to choose which officer gets to do the honours?

No wonder people are migrating in droves.

(err, to some others: the same small blast within a pressurised airline cabin may be more deadly.)

Yeah, but I'd rather have someone examine my behind than being blown up by someone else's.

As an aside - BASTARDS!

he's a sikh... flying across from delhi - indian passport.
drugs ?
hmm - i'm guessin it must've been the turban and beard that set the alarm bells ringing for WMD's.

does anybody have any idea how horrendous an experience that can be ?
thakur jaane [god only knows] how many more horror stories them immigration questioning rooms hold.
sheesh.

AFH - if someone wants to blow themselves up together with others, eventually they will...
have a police state then - heck, you should be comparatively safe thataway.
security is just a synonym for paranoid nowadays.

besides - that was the logic they used to invade iraq, wasnt it ? security ???? lets-blow-them-up-before-they-blow-us-up ?

i'm too pi$$ed off now - away i will go before i get to my soapbox
