Dreadful.

And with incidents like this the severely injured go on dying long after the news coverage stops.

It seems that criminal charges will be brought against the people who allowed the train to pass under the bridge, which had already started to colapse.

Lalu Prasad is doing a 'heads will roll' --- but doesn't seem to be about to resign himself...

In 1956, the Madras-Tuticorin express plunged into a river at Ariyalur (Tamil Nadu) when a bridge was washed away in floods. Railway Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned accepting moral responsibility. Jawaharlal Nehru tried to persuade Shastriji but Lal Bahadur Shastri refused to budge from his stand. He was not to blame for the disaster as nature's fury had caused the damage. But Shastri felt, such a disaster could have been avoided by the Railways.

Lalu is no Lal, a self-less,mild-mannered and soft-spoken socialist. He is an opportunist.

I think I could paraphrase what he said as, "The railway is at fault: somebody else must pay for this"

Biharis are nice people. It is their misfortune to be ruled by perfect idiots, cheats and liars all these years. They were once the toast of civil services. Today they have become a caricature for no fault of theirs.

But the current disaster is a sheer negligence of railway babus.

Indian Railways have an unusual rule. If a bridge were to be built across a railway line or railway property, the Railways iinsists that the portion of the bridge or any other structure that passes over the railway or Railways property be built by themselves. IR has a strong and large team of engineers and resources at its disposal. Such projects are of no consequence to IR in terms of revenue or business. Hence, they usually complete their job quickly and almost always ahead of time. At Bhagalpur too, IR was supposed to demolish the portion of the 150 year old bridge that was over the tracks. What transpired is not known, (smell a rat about kickbacks and contractor bribes) but the Railways not only delayed the demolition but also neglected the risks and precautions.

something is terribly disturbing

yesteryears, trains fell off from bridges, and now, bridges are falling off on trains

which way to go?

bring down all those old railway bridges immediately, over and under the tracks, and construct new ones

they never quite were. that just over hyped no end. since bihar's a state that's good at almost nothing, the few civil servants that they produce, are big time news.

If you recall somedays back a BLUELINE BUS(KILLER LINES as they are famous)fell from the Ashram bridge. How safe are we ?

Now abour "Bihar will always be Bihar". Have you ever been to bihar, and enjoyed the hospitality of Bihari people. If no please do once, you will be forced to changed your statement.

Lalu prasad is a politics, you guys know everything is fair in democracy in India, He has brought Railways in profits, every newspaper is screeming and praising him.. what do you say ??

We try to be friendly on this website, as in life, it's always the best policy.

You've opened the door for anyone to give their own bias assessment of the nastiness of some Delhiites, fortunately, we're mostly grown up enough to refuse this invitation

Yes, I am a proud Bihari, for what it has contributed in our countries development. And a proud Indian on top of that..

The way you describe bihar, i am scared someone might be saying about whole India abroad. What ever it is dirt filth its our motherland and how concern are we to improve that scenario that's important.

I would not let this debate go any further, as steve says we need to be friendly, so no issues..
