Bride and Prejudice

LONDON: Exotic fairy light garlands and Indian drummers in traditional tunics have brought Bollywood to Britain with the world premiere of Bride and Prejudice , an adaptation of Jane Austen's classic tale.

Director Gurinder Chadha said the film gave Pride and Prejudice a modern twist in an Indian setting.

"It's a very British Asian movie that incorporates India, England and America," Chadha told reporters as a host of stars arrived for the premiere on Monday.

"It is very true to Jane Austen and the spirit of the book...

well, the film seems to be a dud, from what i could make out from the reviews. neither here or there. is that what "crossover films" are supposed to be?

waiting for 'Swadesh' which has Shah Rukh Khan throwing away a job at NASA and going back to rural india. saw some interesting pics.

Bollywood Austen film tops chart

Bride and Prejudice contains several Bollywood dance routines
Gurinder Chadha's Bollywood-inspired adaptation of Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice has gone straight to the top of the UK and Ireland box office.
Bride and Prejudice took £1.67m on its first weekend, knocking romantic comedy Wimbledon from the top spot into third place. Horror Saw stayed at number two. Full story

review of B&P

Let me be clear: Gurinder Chadha has been one my favorite directors for a long time. I enjoyed her flicks, "Bhaji at the Beach" and "Bend it Like...". However, B&P is a dud. Though I never really liked Ash Rai, she is the best part of the film with great screen presence. Martin Henderson is equally easy on the eyes but, unlike Ash, has no screen presence and has that 'caught-in-the-headlights-deer' look in the first part of the film (he sort of wakes up in the second half but by that time I did not care). Also, Henderson and Rai have no on-screen chemistry. It seems that Chadha never really figured out what kind of a film she wanted to make: a spoof or parody of Bollywood or a pastiche of Bollywood stereotypes? The film fails on both fronts. My time would be better spent in watching a REAL well-made Bollywood film (such as "Kal Ho Na Ho") or a good remake of "Pride and Prejudice" (such as the one Emma Thompson directed a few years back).

I really want to see this film but it doesn't seem to have got to Australia yet. However, I just saw Mira Nair's (director of "Monsoon Wedding") new film, "Vanity Fair", and I loved it. It only has an extremely slight connection to India but I still really recommend it.

I'ld like to add, Mira Nair's Vanity Fair is very different to Thackery's book AND she gives Becky a happy ending in India! (Unlike the book).

btw Martin Henderson is a New Zealander who used to be in our local soap "Shortland Street".

I was a bit shocked to see it was him opposite the lovely Ash.
