Bombay Univ says mini skirt ban helps stop rape
Mumbai, June 23:
Bombay University plans to ban women from wearing mini skirts, tight tops and shorts, saying this will help prevent rape. Officials at the university say they would prefer to see women students in a traditional salwar-kameez with no deep neckline. "An attire should be such that it should not be offensive or cause distraction to fellow students and lecturers," Vice Chancellor Vijay Khole told reporters. Students have criticised the proposal saying it is not the answer to preventing rape... Read the full article at: http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=49353 |

I can just hear a couple of my university age friends saying.
"Oh My God, Sure and we don't want to see Auntie in a micro-mini and tank top either! And all you perv old farts, leave us alone, you are not telling us what to wear. Welcome to the 21st century." I'm sure this new conservative mini-skirt ban is not going to down well with university students, female and male ![]()

I find their reasoning deeply troubling. They seem to be punishing the victims rather than dealing with the underlying problem. I realize that MU are not charged with solving all of society's deepest conflicts, but imagine the reaction if women were banned from public transport because of sexual harassment by men is too hard to police. It all seems too extreme and misguided.

I agree Iyou.
Rape is about power, not about what a woman wears.

Its not just places like india that have arcane beliefs like this. Several american states are legislating to prevent people wearing hipster jeans, or showing midriff. Im sure that its for a different reason.

they should introduce some sort of dress codes for the silver screen heroines. also, models who showcase products of mnc's and fmcg's. they set up trends which other girls tend to emulate. that is what finally leads to situations like rape.

Unbelievable stuff!!
It's difficult to believe some of the stuff that is posted here.
If a person is intent on raping another person, it does not matter what the victim wears. Old ladies in nightdresses get raped in Australia! |

It's the girl's fault. She was askingfor it. If they dress like that then what can they expect? All women to wear full tent covering from now on... ...
Oh my god, when will this crap ever stop? However, if men and women didn't find each other's bodies interesting then the human race would soon end... More interesting than many a lecture? probably. |

To avoid some unusual things, women should be more careful about their dress, specially this sub continent.

Gents, I really don't want to get into a slanging match with everyone but this is a topic that really gets my goat.
Yes, when I travel in foreign countries I cover up and respect the local traditions. I believe this is the best way to show respect for another culture and I've found it smooths my way in meeting people and interacting with local people. However, when you say that women who dress a certain way are asking to be raped, esssentially what you are saying is that men are so base that they cannot control their sexual urges around women and therefore it's up to the woman to make sure there is no excuse for a man to behave badly. You are blaming women for the moral failings of the man. You are saying men are too weak not to control these urges and act in a respectable manner. You are infact insulting your own kind. Again, rape is about power, not about sex. How a woman dresses is irrelevant. |

In Bangalore, certain colleges have put restrictions on girls wearing only salwar kameez for PU classes. And this rule in fact made these colleges popular amongst parents. BTW, in India parents have a major role in deciding which college one should go to. In Delhi, most of the convent schools have changed their school dress from micro minis (well.. it was supposed to be skirts not below the knees.. but naughty students took it as far up as possible ) to salwaar kameez. And it has become a hit amongst parents. Now everyone of them wants to put their girls in these schools.. !!So dont raise your expectations.. its a different world out here. Mini skirt has no relation to rapes but it gets you a lot of unwanted attention, which one can certainly do without. |
