Bombay to kill 1.2 million stray dogs

BOMBAY, India, March 4 (UPI) -- City officials are seeking permission from the Bombay High Court to start killing 1.2 million stray dogs that inflict 100,000 bites annually.

The high court in 1994 barred killing strays and asked city officials to work with non-governmental organizations on sterilization. Until 1994, the city put down 40,000 strays per year.

It is going to create a big fuss. There are as many as animal rights activists as human right activists here.

Sterilization was a mid path option agreed between the ‘killer’ and ‘saver’ gangs!!!

Thumbs down Bad News !

What about stray people? Mumbai has plenty of them and they are no better than animals.

I would go one step further and say that stray dogs are better !

That's the saddest news I've heard all year. I have never been afraid of a single dog in India... they are all afraid of *us*, and in many cases are just clinging to life. They get kicked and beaten, rocks thrown at them, yet you show them the smallest amount of kindness and they'll be your friend for life.

This doesn't sound a lot different from the forced sterilization of human beings, or "untouchables" that took place during the State of Emergency in the 1970s under Indira Ghandi.

I have heard that Mumbai has outlawed Paan being used in the city too
Next they will say no cows and bicycles need lights at night. What is Mumbai trying to become ???

The poor, faithful animal cannot think.

We human beings have been bestowed with the power of thinking by the almighty, yet some of us behave like animals.

Why?

Anyone who kills stray dogs can't be all bad. That was my opinion of Sanjay Gandhi at least..

We had this poem by Goldsmith in the college textbook.A portrait of mans character and attitude.

An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog

Good people all, of every sort,
Give ear unto my song;
And if you find it wondrous short,
It cannot hold you long.

In Islington there was a man
Of whom the world might say,
That still a godly race he ran -
Whene'er he went to pray.

A kind and gentle heart he had,
To comfort friends and foes;
The naked every day he clad -
When he put on his clothes.

And in that town a dog was found,
As many dogs there be,
Both mongrel, puppy, whelp, and hound,
And curs of low degree.

This dog and man at first were friends;
But when a pique began,
The dog, to gain some private ends,
Went mad, and bit the man.

Around from all the neighbouring streets
The wond'ring neighbours ran,
And swore the dog had lost its wits
To bite so good a man.

The wound it seemed both sore and sad
To every Christian eye;
And while they swore the dog was mad,
They swore the man would die.

But soon a wonder came to light
That showed the rogues they lied, -
The man recovered of the bite,
The dog it was that died!

Does anyone have an update about this? Or maybe some contact information for the municipal government in Mumbai where we can voice our concerns? Weeks later I still can't stop thinking about this.

Believe me, this will never happen. There are way too many animal rights organizations in India. In fact nobody has the will to kill that many living creatures - especially dogs. India is a sooooft country in many ways. Look at other parts of Asia or Europe in how ruthlessly birds and animals were killed because of Avian flu, etc. In India people just talk about these things, nobody has the guts to do it.

And how many of these stray dogs carry rabies and are a health hazard to the general public?
