Bird flu outbreak in parts of West Bengal

Over the last two days, reports have been coming out in the Indian media about a Bird Flu outbreak in West Bengal. The Central government has blamed the WB State Govt. for tardiness in reporting and tackling the outbreak.

Here is one report

Quote:
KOLKATA, India (AFP) — Health workers in eastern India battled Friday to contain an "alarming" outbreak of bird flu amid reports the virus had spread to new areas and local people were resisting a mass poultry cull.

State officials in densely-populated West Bengal said chickens were still on sale despite a ban, while New Delhi called in troops to prevent birds being smuggled out.

The state's chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee described the spread of the virus as "alarming".

Just back from my first visit to India, and spent a week in West Bengal.

With the exception of one area which was being policed to prevent movement of poultry, the rest of WB was declared free of bird flu around Feb 11/12 and things were more or less normal.
