...decided by INDIAN travelers....

I've been to two of the "worst" and will be in Varanasi in March; have not been to any of the "best."
I guess the Universe is telling me something....
p.s. you can keep Puri...

I haven't been to any of them nor are any on my Indian Bucket list.

The list looks very tilted towards Hindu shrines with one each from Sikhism and Islam. None of the leading Jain, Buddhist or Christian destinations are even mentioned (and I suppose that is a reflection of the numbers that voted). Also, some of the more beautiful religious destinations (Badri/Kedar) are missing perhaps as the numbers that reach say, Tirupati would far exceed those that visit the ones that are harder to reach. Not sure how the survey folks designed the scale as Ajmer and Shirdi feature both in 'top' and 'most mismanaged' ones simultaneously!

I think they are top, as in most visited, not how good they are. The news title is also erroneous as it does not indicate the best, but most visited and most mismanaged, as obvious by the title and the data. Sometimes, the joy that the Daybreak brings, is unparalleled!
In my opinion Ajmer is the worst managed religious site.
The Sajjadanashins pester you to no end... and even inside the tomb, they are all out to take your money.
Very Very unpleasant experience. You are made to realise that your devotion means nothing, it's only moolah that counts.....
I don't know why Govt. doesn't do anything when it's so famous and reverred place.

Hi
Most beautiful and the worst and mismanaged hindu religious site is Kedarnath Temple in Uttrakhand.
You do not have to wait, when you arrive by helicopter and you have to wait in long long queue for 6-8 hours, when you arrive on foot, pony or kandi
Poojaris (priests) here always asking for money and more money.
Thanks
Alok

Varanasi may or may not be The Best (though it is for me
but it is The Test . . . while there if you can transcend the physical-ness of it, the sensual over-stimulation, the touts, etc . . . then you've "passed."

darmabum, I think the Varanasi tourist board -- if there is such a thing.... http://www.varanasicity.com/ -- should hire you as the Ambassador!
