Thanks you so much for your offer, that is too kind for words to describe, you are such a kindhearted person and I am grateful for your offer. The community of Mt. Gambier are in constant contact with Jock (Ryan's father) so our communications are okay.

I will keep him in my prayers. It is so very sad to see this happen to backpackers in my country.
There is also an Izraeli missing and there is a search and rescue team somewhere in HP looking for him. |

Here is an idea for you indian scientists....develop a watch like device that has a link to GPS when traveling in remote places. that way no one gets lost.
And my sympathies with Ryan's family. Hope he is found soon.

Missing backpacker
I am a reporter with the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper in Australia and we are trying to prepare a story on the disappearance of Ryan Chambers. If there have been any recent developments that anyone is aware of, or if anyone has access to local media reports on the topic, I'd be grateful if they could post here, or email me with same.

A New Lead
The radio this morning reported that Jock Chambers (Ryan's Father) had found Ryan's diary sometime yesterday. There was an entry written by Ryan that said "If I am gone, I am not dead, I have gone to free my mind..."
This may be an imperative lead as it seems that Ryan has just left at his own will without telling John and his family. If this is the case then, it has still left the community of Mt. Gambier stunned to think that Ryan has done this as it is such a careless act. I hope this is the case, because the other reason is too terrible to think of and I am sorry that this thread has caused so many people to worry. I know that if Ryan has only wandered off (which is very much our of character) as much as everyone is worried for his well-being, I hope he knows how much stress he has caused on people. But please return home Ryan, your friends, family and people who don't know you, are worried. |

I truly hope he has just wandered off, it wouldn't be the first time India has encouraged people to go and seek themselves in an Ashram or forest!
This has to be the best case scenario!! Lets hope we can all laugh about this in the weeks to come!! |

How would John Booker have reacted if Ryan had told him he was about to go off and 'find himself'?
I'm just wondering if Ryan thought that John may have talked him out of it, so instead just left the remark in his diary. His diary has only just been found? had it been lost? The diary entry is a good sign though, and I'm sure that people in Mt. Gambier prefer to be angry with him than to have lost him.

It does seem like an encouraging sign, but surely he must have realized how much distress this would cause if he did just strike out. There is a report on this development in "the Advertiser", a Melbourne newspaper:

Yep I agree entirely but I know this happens on a regular basis with travellers giving up on their western ways and cutting off all contact.
It's very selfish and I'm not entirely sure I understand the thoughts behind such a decision but it happens I'm assured that at least a few of the missing from the Kullu area have done the same thing! Still I'm sure his parents would rather see him alive and irresponsable! |
