Question Attack on rescue team in Kashmir

Jihad's new anti-US front

A US military spokesman at Islamabad announced as follows on November 1,2005: 'A United States Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter flying in the vicinity of Chakothi delivering relief aid to earthquake victims is believed to have been fired upon by a rocket-propelled grenade today. The helicopter returned safely to base at Chaklala at 1430 and an investigation was under way.'

Chakothi is about 10 kms from the Line of Control, which divides India's Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Isn't the OP depressing, just what is wrong with some people?

On the other hand, the new level of cooperation between India and Pakistan is very promising. I hope the governments realise that in this world, it is so much better to be friends than enemies.

unfortunately, it has been better for the governments politically, if the countries remain enemies.

Arrow Cycles

Not sure if some of the responses reflect a long view of history and takes a rather narrow view in time. Conflicts between countries/peoples/governments etc. go on all the time, from the beginning of time, and after sometime either truce, surrender or fatigue takes over and peace sets in. Conflicts are nothing new at all and whether it was Kings, Maharajah's, Popes, Imans, Presidents or Prime Ministers, Dicators, or governments conflict has always and will always exist. I for one do not subcribe to some utopian view of humanity and life where there is no conflict.

I think a more helpful view would be to actually see within any conflict what the underlying clash of views might be. That would make an interesting debate and conversation, it would seem to me...

Army officers from India and Pakistan on Monday shook hands and exchanged pleasantries at the frontier point Chakhan-Da-Bag as the first of the three points on the Line of Control was opened for earthquake relief work.

In the twilight years of my life I have just one wish, let my children & all the young people of both India & Pakistan see light at the end of the tunnel. Since my youth we had seen only darkness, storms & pain.

Now that's something really positive. Let's hope it continues.

This is something we all aspire to jyotirmoy - unfortunately politicians and governments see it otherwise

Lightbulb Angry Kashmiris Rush Border

Pakistani police shot in the air and fired tear gas in efforts to disperse hundreds of angry Kashmiris who surged towards the Indian side of the Line of Control, shortly after the border was opened………

However neither people nor trucks actually crossed the border.

Instead, Indian porters unloaded trucks containing supplies and handed them to civilians on the Pakistani side, the first time a load of relief supplies has crossed the frontier…….

"The ceremony is to hand over 25 truckloads of relief to the Pakistani side," said Indian army officer Shantanu Ghosh.

"This includes tents, rations and medicines. There will be no cross-border movement of people. We have asked for the names of people who want to visit their relations in India across the border and Pakistan also has asked for the list from the Indian side," he said…….

Snow has been forecast in the area this week and three million people are still homeless in Pakistan alone.

The Kashmir earthquake: Failures on the road to disaster

Refugees from far-flung mountain villages are on the move in search of shelter before the first snowfalls. The relief effort for the homeless is desperately underfunded and disease has struck the camps. Justin Huggler reports from the Neelum Valley
Published: 10 November 2005
Time is running out for Yassir Batt. A month on from the Kashmir earthquake, he still has no shelter to sleep under. When night falls, he and his brothers huddle together around a fire beside the ruins of their home in the mountains above Muzaffarabad.
In a week or two, the snow will arrive here. Higher up the valley, the locals predict that the next time it rains, it will be as snow. Yassir is 13 years old. If he does not have any shelter when the snow comes, he will die.

Unhappy

It is just so depressing to read what's happening there. This is going to be a humanitarian crisis of mega proportions, as if it isn't bad enough already!!!

The magnitude of the disaster is gigantic. Tents required to handle the cold & the wind are heavy & in short supply. The biggest helicopter can not carry more than a dozen or so. A total of 100000 tents are required to provide shelter to all the affected people. Then come the question of fuel & food. Snowfall is early this year. Unless the rquired arrangements are made nature will again claim its victims. Under such duress law & order situation will detoriate & the situation can quickly go out of control. Worst sufferers will be the aged & the children.
