Another hit for Mumbai and India - Fire at Oil Rig

A major fire has broken out at one of the oil platforms in Bombay High oil fields of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The Bombay High field produces 40 per cent of India's just over 33 million tonnes crude oil output and is the home for the country's biggest gas field, Bassein.

One of the ways they put out oil rig fires is by blowing them up. The explosion deprives it of oxygen. Otherwise they can burn indefinately. Obviously a job for a professional. Red Adair, where are you?

Fire was on a production platform called BHN (Bombay High North) (not a rig, not a wellhead platform, please keep the explosives safely away :-))

It occured when ONGC vessel "Samudra Rakshak" (ironic eh :-)) attempted to carry out a medical evacuation in rough weather. It collided with the platform rupturing a pipeline, thus causing the fire.
