Just makes me ponder -

"Is the Low cost Airlines model working better than the Full Service Airlines one?? - especially on short haul domestic routes???"

(crossposted, and partly in response to shashank)

Well, consumer groups have long complained that part of the 'taxes' the airlines charged were actually operating costs and not payable to the government. They put them under the taxes head to make buyers feel better (Remember Air Deccan and the famous 'one rupee' tickets?. Shashank's message confirms this. Else, how can airlines reduce government taxes?

This link is not only about the Jet airways layoff, now invalid, but about the impact on the street in India of the financial crisis

Armed with a student loan, he enrolled in flight attendant school and snatched himself a dream job with Jet Airways, India’s largest private carrier, six months ago. In short order, he bought his first car, renovated his apartment and threw himself into the high life of young, exuberant New India.

This week, he was fired.

All these media reports are only twisting the picture.

What I read was that most of the probationary attendants were getting Rs.10k per month.

The loans they took were for their education and nothing to do with Jet Airways. If Jet would not have hired them in first place, then also they would have to look for a job after the education. So the local scenario remains the same. They would have to find a job then and they would have to find a job now.

Secondly, regarding cars, personal loans etc, most of the banks they do not give loans to people with such a small track of employment. I used to work in a Fortune 5 company few years back, and to get my bike financed by a sister entity of the same company I was working for, I had to show track of 6 months of employment (It was only 5 months at that time, however things were sorted out internally ). And those were the good times, low interest rates, low delinquencies etc.

And I current fragile scenario, I cannot believe any bank giving credit to people with virtually no track of employment.

I hate to see people loose jobs , but i cant help but feel a bit for Jet , its firing Vs going under , maybe they did not have good foresight , maybe they made mistakes along the way...but if streamlining needs to be done then it does right?

We look at the government and accuse them of being over staffed , the end result to streamline that would be the same as well...loss of jobs...

As long as its done properly, and the legal roadmap has been followed , i think we need to give jet a break as well... but all things said their timing was horrible - Diwali around the corner

Absolutely. If we embrace the'free' market without reservation (in case of investment banks and some others, read controlled by greedy, unregulated, unscrupulous and sometimes criminal individuals and corporations), then we must also embrace hire and fire policies.

Kingfisher Airlines cuts 90% salaries of trainee pilots

Quote:
After Jet Airways, it’s now the turn of Kingfisher Airlines employees to face the heat. The airline has lined up a host of cost-cutting measures, a majority of which involves drastic salary cuts.

----
The most affected will be the new lot of trainee co-pilots who not only have to go back to their stipend pay, but also be prepared for an uncertain future.
Quote:
About 70 trainee pilots’ monthly salaries stand to come down from Rs 1.95 lakh (newly endorsed ATR/A320 pilots) and Rs 90,000 (trainees on probation) to a stipend of Rs 20,000 per month,’’ said an airline official who did not wish to be named.

Quote:
The cost-cutting will not be limited to the junior pilots and is slated to go all the way up to the wide-bodied A340 pilots as well.

Question The Perfect Financial Storm

Listening to Greenspan the other day reminded me of this. I wasn't sure where to post but I think some of you here may find this interesting. Look at the date it was written, the predictions, and look at the parellels to today. I found this 7 years ago when I was still active in various markets.

Yes, very interesting goangoangone. The warnings have been out there for years. I'm a big fan of plain-speaking Peter Schiff. The link below is his Dateline (SBS channel Australia) interview with Steve keen, who wrote 'Debunking economics'

I assume you are being sarcastic Shashank!

I have just booked tickets with Kingfisher... I am preparing myself for disruption, but this time for once I am flexible with dates. If I needed to fly on the specific date I wouldn't have bought Kingfisher. And, I booked through a travel agent instead of Kingfisher directly; that probably means the ticket is covered by IATA, etc.
