Accidental Fire Brings More Distress

Fiery end to tsunami-hit village in Tamil Nadu

First the sea, now the fire. Akkarapettai, less than half a kilometre from Nagapattinam port, is one ravaged island-village. When district officials began cremating bodies in this near-destroyed village, after transporting rotting bodies to mass burial sites became unfeasible, an accidental fire set off more distress among locals.

Haunted by repeated warnings of epidemics by doctors in Nagapattinam, the district administration finally decided that burying bodies that are washed on to shores would only lead to infections among survivors.

When a host of decomposed bodies were found in Kichanguppam and Akkarapettai on Wednesday, four days after the tsunami battered the region, rescue officials decided to cremate the bodies.
