24 Dead in Indian Bus Crash
Last Updated: Saturday, 9 July, 2005, 10:15 GMT 11:15 UK
Dozens killed in India bus crash At least 24 people have died in a bus accident in the northern Indian state of Uttaranchal, officials say. Twenty-five others were injured in the crash late on Saturday morning. The vehicle, which was coming from Srinagar in the in Garhwal district , plunged into a gorge near the holy city of Rishikesh. A rescue operation has begun and survivors have been taken to a nearby hospital, police say. A senior local police official told the BBC that the 45-seater bus fell into a deep river gorge off a key national highway connecting the Indian capital, Delhi, to Badrinath, the famous Hindu shrine. |

Harrowing indeed. I almost came a cropper myself on the Pondicherry-Chennai road. Unfortunately the road is in fantastic condition and the driver don't need an excuse to take advantage. Suffice to say I was an uncomfortably close witness to a game of chicken at about 80mph between two egomaniac bus drivers. When the oncoming truck arrived I genuinely thought 'I'm actually about to die here, bloody hell' and I was well used to the bus drivers at this point. It looked like there was NO WAY we could avoid a head on collision. In the end we did, but the swerve saw the bus partially lift off the ground and it took about 100 yards before the driver had control again. The whole bus almost rioted, everyone going absolutely berserk at the driver.
When you read these reports it doesn't make you feel any better. |

Srinigar to Jammu
Hello,we have just returned from a visit to Srinigar. We travelled in a taxi to and from Jammu. The road is quite scary in places with the remnants of landslides and huge drops to the valleys below.I certainly would not take this road on in a bus.If you take a taxi, look for older drivers[they will have more experience hopefully]take several driver reviver stops and pray. Our driver on the return trip was quite young and seemed to be more in a hurry, kindest cheers,Carol.

I hate the busses that have bars across the windows (Maharashtra) and worse the riot prepared ones with screens. No way you can get out if it goes down the nalla into the drink. Still, as many busses as I rode in Maharashtra only had accidents and only one involved fatalities..
