Initially I had to turn my computer upside down ... ?? Are these trains like the ones on 'Thunderbirds' ?

Emmergency halt buttons, drizzle, computer failure, 'occupants' panic... I can imagine the scenario..

Actually when I arrived at Madgaon station on Wedcnesday my first reaction was "what is that huge concrete monstrosity they're building?". It looked like a raised highway only not wide enough. One of the staff told me it was the sky bus and that there'd been some kind of accident. The whole concept seems glaringly unneccessary AFAICT. Could it be the product of corruption and kickbacks in local government, maybe?

Thanks for the link tho.

The skybus is a possible solution for mass transit problems in Indian cities. It has the advantage of not requiring large scale land acquisition (which is what makes most mass transit options unviable in India). It is not a large leap technologically and is much cheaper than a genuine underground metro.

It is being promoted by the head of Konkan Railway Rajaram and has a strong supporter in the Goa Chief Minister Panicker. Hence the test track is in Goa. The system has several critics the foremost being Shreedharan the head of Delhi Metro. No Indian city has bought into the "skybus" yet and are waiting for the results of the trial runs. As yet I havent heard of any allegations of kickbacks.

It goes without saying that safety issues were not adequately looked at before the trial runs. Indeed in the news footage one could see the coaches being operated without even the doors being closed!

If you are interested the Yahoo group "Delhimetro" follows urban mass transit issues in India.

Sorry, I meant "The whole concept seems glaringly unneccessary in Goa". I'm sure you are correct that it would have significant benefits in many cities throughout India, though.
