Which airport to fly into for South India start?

Hi all,

I'm planning a 3 month trip to India. I've got the basics of what I want to see & how long to spend there, but I'm at the point of booking tickets now and am having trouble deciding on what area to fly into.

So based on the fact that this is our 1st trip to India I've decided to start with the south and work our way North (have heard it's less overwhelming this way).
(Background info: we're early 30's, have travelled pretty extensively, on medium budget).

In the south, we're wanting to see the backwaters & spend some time on the beaches there.

We'd like an open jaw ticket - into somewhere in the south & out of Delhi. I think the best option for starting around Kerala is Cochin, but this ticket is overly expensive. My other options are:
- Chennai - then train
- Bangalore - then train
- Trivandrum - seems closest, but this would require an overnight stop in Delhi on the way - but does this defeat the whole point of starting in the south?

Would really appreciate your helpful advice! Thanks in advance!!

Why not fly in and out of Delhi, and take an internal flight to Cochin at the start, should be around Rps5000

chennai- the best.catch train to allepey - venice of east.again you have to travel about 10 hours in train after flight.but if you book second class AC the journey would be very comfortable and since train starts in night ,you basically go to sleep at chennai and wake up at allepey.no pain.

Thanks! That's all really helpful.
I didn't want to fly into Delhi or Mumbai as I've heard the big cities are overwhelming for the 1st time India visitor. The price difference to fly into Bangalore or Chennai over Mumbai or Delhi is negligable.

Sounds like Chennai gets your vote over Bangalore. Sounds good. Thanks all!
