I have just recieved confirmation from the hotel we are staying in, in varanasi (www.ganpatiguesthouse.com) They have confirmed that the Festival is on the 13th June so we get there a day late. I think it runs on for 10 days however.
As for keeping cool, if your not use to the heat (being from colder parts of the world) you will still be hot where ever you go, weather in Dharamsala will still be approx 38 centigrade so your still going to be hot. My tip would be to purchase some loose, light clothing, you will be able to pick up some up cheap shirts when you get there. Get up early for breakfast etc and try and get some sightseeing done either morning or late afternoon. Midday have lunch somewhere where you can get out of the heat. It's amazing how fresh fruit juices and lassi keep you cool. We take a chess set with us and just sit a bar when it's at it's hottest - Beware Indians are brilliant at chess and you will hardly ever win - It's a great way to make friends !!! |

Good spirit Davehelen,
Not only have I received similar experiential predictions on all the travel forums, I am currently staying with an Indian born person who assures me that I would be held captive by air conditioned refuges if I dared venture to central India during June. Moreover, I suspect that Yorkshire and Vancouver Canada share the same moderate climate - hardly a training ground for extreme climate travel. I am currently booking flights to Colombo (civil war versus climate?) as a starting point in South Asia with plans to go north after acclimatization. I look forward to your updates on your plans and your experiences once in country. |

It is a good spirit, but it is also sensible to realise that such temperatures can be dangerous!
This is real Take-it-easy weather. Do so, and you can still have fun. Act like its an English spring day, and you could end up in hospital!
