Where to be for Holi? Varanasi?

Hi Everyone

Have just joined IndiaMike and think it is a wicked site. I am going to India for 2 weeks and will be there for Holi. I am a first timer to India but am not a stranger to the road!

Can anyone recommend anywhere to celebrate Holi?? I am flying into Delhi but am thinking about spending Holi in Varanasi given that it is a sacred Hindu place.

Any suggestions anyone??

Mathura Vrindavan would be nice on Holi, given that it has a religious/folk tradtion associated with the life of Sri Krishna and His consort.
Avoid any of the big cities, where Holi is just an excuse for drunken mobs to take to the streets and make life miserable for anyone around, especially women.

Very true, Indizen. I personally would not recommend to be out in the street during Holi at all (it is only a few hours morning till noon), but watch and share the celebration in a walled-in site, like a temple compound or so.
