Lucky with your puncture KS! A real good news story! Washing machine lassi, that sounds extraordinary Machadinha! I've never seen that - I assume it was in the Punjab?

Humble apologies, Captain - put it down to eating popcorn at the same time and not concentrating properly! And the thought of that lassi coming out of the hose-pipe just made my mind boggle! If you knew where the hose-pipe of my washing machine drained into your mind would boggle too!!!!

from Agra

Dec 27th ...we reached Agra today 3:00PM after seeing Akbar's Tomb at Sikandara (on way, on NH2) and then we rushed to Taj Mahal immediately (as tomorrow, friday, it is closed it seems).

Taj Mahal is still as beautiful and awesome, as it was the last time I saw it a 6-7 years ago! Tomorrow we will see the Agra Fort and then push off to Kanpur. - KS

Ksb, Enjoy Kanpur, briefly. Not one of my favourite places.

About 1982, I sat in the car and told the driver, show me the sights.

So he takes me to a dirty nullah*, unlit and potholed roads.. and says, 'This is the Marine Drive of Kanpur'.

I think he mistook my speechlessness for awe

In Kanpur now

Hi everybody,

We reached Kanpur today at 4:00PM after seeing Agra Fort ... Agra fort was absolutely fantastic... took many pics there on my DSLR. Hope they turn out good.

Kanpur is just a night stop for us .. no sight-seeing is planned here (unless I decide to go see a school, that I attended way back in 1958-59 St. Aloysius! That was 50 years ago when i was 9 yrs old!) BTW: I had seen a India - West Indies Test Match, back in 58-59 in Green Park Kanpur ... the one in which Jassu Patel took 9 WI wickets, in one innings, if my memory serves me right!!

Driving on the 4-lane highway (the renewed GT road a.k.a NH2) to this place we witnessed some crazy UP Bhai-Bhayyas on cycles / tractors / 2 wheelers / lorries / tempos / bullock carts etc. on the wrong side of the highway They were coming on the rightmost fast-lane of the highway in the wrong direction! First we thought, they were too lazy to go around and do a u-turn ... BUT No, this seems to be a whimsical habit here in this state! We passed hundreds of vehicles this way today ... they just suddenly appear in front of you, on your lane, when you are doing 80KMPH ... they appeared stoically calm ... while we were scared out of our wits!

We are now getting to see some really backward and dirty places of India! Agra city traffic was crazy; with autos grid-locking the chowks & lanes, with plain dumb stupidity! I am now dreading Bihar and Jharkhand that lies ahead of us.

We go to Varnasi tomorrow from here. One day ahead of schedule as of now!

Hi KS,

Stange to hear that people were riding on wrong side of the highway. That's very bad. It's like they do not care for their life but we have to care for ours as well as their lives.

Hope you have a good journey in Lalu's Bihar.

Ronak.

Scary stuff, KS - look after yourselves, and I'm thinking of you both in Bihar. Is that 'shooting equipment' at the ready??

KSB Sir, sometimes your post not only makes me nostalgic but also to others what I have observed. I was in Varanasi long back in late seventees when I was in school. Did boating in river Ganga. At the mid range over Ganga my uncle took a glass of water and asked me to drink. It was cold but very tasty..... do not know the condition now!!!!
I do not know whether the reflex action of a human being gets matured with age while driving car considering age group of 20 to 60.I am at the mid range, the lower I understand but the upper...? You have been doing it fantastic despite all the hurdles you faced recently. Anyway it is not required to say still-- please be careful and drive safely.

Short story about UP driving,

About ten years ago, a guy tells me about a moderate car crash he was involved in en route Kanpur to Lucknow. Family travelling, luckily nobody was badly hurt.

He then says, "And we weren't even armed!!'

I asked him if he would have shot the survivors if he had been armed

(For travellers who may not know UP, don't be unduly alarmed. He was overreacting, maybe even paranoid)
