what to do with main backpack during the day?
Hi IM
I'm completely new to this forum so hello! I'm travelling to India in under two weeks. Although I will be volunteering in Kerala for 6 weeks at the beginning, I am then off travelling on my own but excited. What do travellers do with their main backpack during their days travelling? Do most hotels offer a left luggage service? Or do some people leave them in their hotel rooms? thanks Jenny |

That is what I have a hotel room for as opposed to a bed.. I try not to carry what I couldn't afford to lose. You should close up windows..

I never leave money or travellers' checks or my camera in my hotel room; I do leave my travel bag there when I'm out all day.
I also carry my own padlock, and use it instead of one the hotel may provide. |

Generally, keep all valuables with you in a day pack (or the like).
Your main bag should be kept in your hotel room. At the risk of sounding paranoid, as WonderWoman recommends, use your own padlock (a good solid one) on the door to the room; and as Edwardseco points out, make sure the windows are closed & locked. Also, make sure that there are no obvious points of entry into the room. I met a lady from London who told me that she was staying in the "Y" in Delhi & someone tried to creep through an open window at the top of the door - she saw a hand snaking through to further open the window & she slammed it shut. Cheers Zoltan

I've always left everything in my room! And that includes having staff access the room for cleaning. Wouldn't leave valuables on display, though, and would lock the case; my reasoning is that, on a bad day, temptation can make a thief of an honest man.
I guess I've been lucky. Haven't travelled low-budget, though. |

I'm guessing, and I'm sure that she'll clarify if i'm incorrect that travellinlassie is referring to where to put the bag when check out is 12pm and she wants to wander as next connection is for example at 5pm.
I have never been to India before either, and wonder if like most places the hotels will allow you to leave the luggage behind reception ( and yes your own padlock is useful here)until you need it? JInj |
