What areas to avoid in July and August
I have always dreamt of taking the family to India and I am trying to get to India in July or August for 2 to 3 weeks (maybe 4 if I can persuade my wife and we can afford it). Friends and family advise us that December to February is the only time to go but, as both our children are in school that is just not possible. Are there "no go" areas during those months (too hot/too wet/ too much?) or can we do the tourist thing and visit the temples, palaces etc. We have flexibility with plane, train and car but being pampered Americans, albeit ABCDs, we would want to be in Steve's "mid to high" budget range. It will possibly upset the veterans of this site but itinerary suggestions would also be most appreciated and if we could luck into festivals... wow!

Rather than do all your work for you, I'll offer a suggestion: find yourself a website that shows where the monsoon will be in India at any particular time - that's the place you want to avoid. However, at the end of the day, you might just find that Ladakh is the best place for you to be then, especially if you like mountains and don't mind a bit of walking. If you have the money, you can fly in, take your time adjusting to altitude, then stay in some nice hotels, see a whole bunch of palaces, and pay for some porters to carry your bags whilst you wander about in the hills -you'll have an amazing time. You could even carry on to Srinagar, stay on Dal Lake in amazing houseboats, and get yourself a bunch of stories that will blow the minds of friends back home.

For July & August in India Leh - Ladakh is the best option.

Hi Janv,
You can get easily in the web the statistics of the monsoon's rains. In any case is an experience you'll never forget. Rajasthan and Gujarat have less rains than other states. In some regions like Mandu in Madhya Pradesh monsoon time is the best period of the year. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu the monsoon have two different periods. In general my advice is to travel to India and don't be worried about monsoon, is only uncomfortable in big cities. Jorge |
