I'm not a huge fan of Goa personally having last been there in 2010, but I am taking my wife on her first trip through the South and she has Goa in her mind as a must see Southern experience.

I'm thinking that maybe the best way to experience Goa as a couple in our 40's would be to stay in Panjim and commute to a different beach each day over 2 or 3 days?

Has anyone tried this strategy to avoid the usual nonsense?

Looking for a strategy that has worked for other like minded travelers...

Thanks!

How do you plan to commute from Panaji to the beaches?

What is your wife's expectation about Goa? If she is looking for a beach stay experience then your plan will not work.

Like Aarosh says, if you are looking just for a beach stay, then staying in Panjim is not the best option.
Panjim gives you the option of exploring the diversity of Goa - North for beaches, south and east for culture and history.

Just beach I would suggest go to south Goa, you will be away from the commercial beaches, Palolem, Agonda would be nice but would restrict the places you can go to.
Majorda, Varca, Benaulim would keep you a bit closer to other places if you so desire..

When are you planning to visit Goa?

Why not split it? Do 2 nights in Panjim for the real Goan experience. I'd recommend staying here it's excellent http://www.hadbgoa.com.

Then head down south (away from all the nonsense) to Patnem and experience quiet, serene peaceful beach Goa for a few days.

Thanks everyone - The visit would be second half of December most likely which will bring its own challenges I am aware.

We will be stopping in at Gokarna and Varkala later in the trip which in my opinion bring better beach time. Goa carries a certain fame to it, so I think she just wants to see what its all about. When we were North on our last trip she felt the same about Varanasi - in that its part of the northern experience.

I do like Panjim for that Portuguese flavour and I guess I was hoping a taxi for the local beach scene may give her a glimpse of that side of Goa as well.

In that case staying at Panjim is better. Take a cab and see Calangute / Baga / Anjuna where your wife should be able to see the Goa she heard of.

Second half of December is the time where the crowd starts to swell till the first week of January.

If anyone has tried this strategy of using Panjim as a base for Goa and had feedback Id still love to hear it.

We don't have to consider this thread closed by any means...

Hi,

When visiting Goa some time back, with my "first time in India" girlfriend, we were delighted to stay at Garca Branca homestay.

This was honestly amazing!

Carlos, the owner, was at one time the manager of a Vancouver ice hockey team, so you may have something to chat about.

They arranged cars for trips to heritage houses, and the beach too, as well as drop and pick up at the train station.

If you read the trip advisor reviews, mine is #35, dated 6 Jan 2010.

Their set up has changed a bit, but I am sure they would be worth an email.

Cheers,

Edwin.

Traffic in Panjim is horrendous at the best of time, but with the bridge and road works I would stay away if especially if your thinking of getting taxi to beach. If you want to stay in city why not look at Margao
its much nearer the beaches and less traffic

Thanks Edwin... I also hail from Vancouver but I do get pretty negative about our hockey teams...
