Smile Varanasi to Chtiwan

Hi, I am new to IndiaMike and new to India. This December and Jan I will be travelling around India and Nepal - Cant wait.

I would like to know the best way to get from Varanasi to the Nepal boarder and onto Chitwan.

I have done some research which suggests get a train or bus from Varanasi to Gorakhpur then get a local bus to Sunauli. Its probably not best to stay in Sunauli but stay in Bhairhawa. From there I will be going to the Chitwan National park and plan to travel to Bharatpur and make my way from there.

In your experience is this the best mode of travel and the best place to cross the border? What should I look out for, how should I arrange it and what bits in advance? How long should I leave for this leg of my journey? Any suggestions or comments on that part of the trip would be welcome, thankyou.

Hi iwtbam,

Best way from Varanasi to Chitwan is by train to Gorakpur and then local bus or shared jeep to Sunauli/Bhairawa. From Bhairawa take a shared jeep or a bus to Kathmandu and stop in Narayargardh and from there is just a short ride (by tonga or autorickshaw) to Sauraha. If you take a night train to Gorakhpur you should do it easily in the same day.

There are also direct private buses from Varanasi to Kathmandu and then you can stop in Narayargardh (crossroads) and from there to Sauraha.
