Uttar Pradesh or Rajasthan with kids

Dear India Lovers,

has anybody travelled Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh with children before.
Maybe have some suggestions, links, ideas where we really have, what to do or see.
(Jaipur, Jodphur, Bikaner, Udaipur / Agra, Allahabad, Varanasi, Rishikesh ?????) What will make travelling easier. Where is the highest possibility to meet other kids or families. Where are suitable Hotel/Guesthouses)

(fyi: Our girls are 7 & 9 years old and the have travelled Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Goa with us in the last 2 years. And they just loved it. We will be travelling sometime in August. )

For even the slightest information we are very thankful.

Love,
Cinnamonelves

Travelling in UP is not much different from travelling elsewhere in India with children; not a children specific comment, but you will have to be more careful with personal security in areas of UP.

Where depends on what children enjoy. Somehow I don't think children enjoy cities like Varanasi too much, but I may be wrong.

Rishikesh is Uttaranchal, not UP. If you are looking at that state, then the whole of the Himalayas is a possibility. If your kids enjoy quieter places, then this is it. If they enjoy a touristy setting, then all those other places you mention will do.

You may not see a lot of other kids unless you are travelling in the school holiday season.

Hi Cinnamonelf!

We are traveling to Rajasthan soon with our 3 and 8 year olds. We too wanted to create an itinerary trying to keep it very kid friendly! i.e. minimizing car time as much as possible, trying to avoid sleeping in a different place every night.

After months of agonizing and the wonderful help of IndiaMike ... this is the itinerary we came up with. We will be touring Rajasthan after visiting with family in Kolkata.

Day 1- March 31st Udaipur arrive @ airport

Day 2- April 1 Udaipur

Day 3- April 2 Lv. for Pushkar 2.5 hrs to visit Jain Temples & Kumbhalgarh
Continue on to Pushkar

Day 4- April 3 Pushkar

Day 5- April 4Lv. Pushkar go to Madhogarh Fort

Day 6- April 5 Agra-

Day 7- April 6 Delhi

Day 8- April 7 Delhi

Day 9- April 8 Delhi depart late evening to Airport for international flight

When are you traveling? We return April 9, so if you want to remind me with a note...I will be happy to let you know how it went!

I don't know exactely for how many days you want to make travel in the North?
But Since I had been worked many years as a professional driver in all the Northern part of India till Nepal.
According me you should go to Delhi + Rajasthan + Agra and go back to Delhi.

The route you can choose as follows:-
Delhi
Mandava
Bikaner
Phalodi
Jaisalmer
Jodhpur
Ranakpur
Udaipur
Pushkar
Bundi
Ranthambhore National Park
Jaipur
Agra
If you intrested to go Varanasi then you can continue to
Orchha
Khajuraho
Varanasi - by flight to by train from Satna train station.
Varanasi
Delhi by flight or by bight train.
This is best possible route for you it can be managed easily in 20 to 25 days and it can be modyfy accroding the number of days.
This area very well organised for tourism, has very good level hotels, midways, restaurents, good streets.
If you are coming to India in July and August then remember national park is not open at this time.
About monsoon and hot, it is true but you also must know that most of the Italion, Spanish and French people has summer holidays in this time and they travel lot at this time. Many people travel with there kids in Rajasthan.
Wish you all the best for your travel.

That tour would be punishing for anyone, but I feel 99% sure that anyone travelling with kids would cut their losses and walk away from that tour half way through it.

It's frightening that a travel agent would recommend this tour.

Dear steven_ber,
I don't know how you are saying these words about this tour itinerary? Since 80% people from Europe who has spending more then 15 days in North India they take this same route.
More then 200 family groups make this route with us.
Anyway!!!!!
I respect your thoughts but since I had been worked as a driver and drove more then one million kilimeters on these routes and many of the families travel with there kids because of that I can tell that this is perfect route for any one.
Yes, people need more or less 20 days minimum for this route.
Please steven_ber, I feel sorry if I hurt you for my any word.
You also can do this tour without any problem, sure.
Thanks.

CE - As some have already suggested, the timing (August) and the interests above would suggest Uttaranchal to me. UP and Rajasthan are both rather hot, and UP hot and humid this time of the year, and the monsoons might (or might not) be a factor. In my view, some of the itineraries (rajuIndia) suggested are inappropriate for this time of the year - even more so with children.

I'd head to the foothills and deeper parts of the mountains. You may consider Corbett tiger preserve (although heat and humidity might still be a factor) and then go up into the Kumaun region of Uttaranchal. Nainital has a very nice lake and used to have a sail boat regatta in the summer (though I am not sure of the timing) and the weather should be nice. There are other places in mountains with lakes. There are plenty of nice guest houses around.

Take care of the drinking water of the kids. Use packaged drinking water where it is available preferebly Bisleri, kinsley, Kingfisher,Aquafina etc.Use water purifying liquids like 'Zeoline 200'where bottled water is not available. In my opinion it is a must for kids. August is mostly rainy season in hills.Last week of August will be better for garhwal, kumaun region. Rajasthan will be very hot and humid.

Thanks for the suggestions Tasuray! I see you are in Kolkata...we are starting our journey from there (my in-laws). It didn't occur to me to bring purifying agents as we have always been able to obtain safe bottled water in Kolkata & Krishnagar. Do you think I will have a problem finding good bottled water in Rajasthan?

Water purifier

Welcome to Kolkata. No, you will get bottled water in Rajasthan or most of the common tourist spots. But in interiors of Uttarakhand Hills you may not get. I have no faith on unbranded bottled water i.e. local made one.I've suggested it because when I travel with my son or even go for trek myself I keep this with me for emergency.
