Udaipur to Goa, via the Nilgiri Blue Mountian Rail?

HI, I know the Nilgiri Toy Train does not run from Udaipur, but is there a way to leave Udaipur via plane and and maybe through Mumbai get another plane to a city near the train? Once we've spent a day or two in the area I need to get on to NOrth Goa.

I've also read about riding the train for part of the trip and then hiking back, has anyone done this and how long does it take?

You can fly Udaipur - Delhi - Bangalore / Chennai-Coimbatore or Udaipur - Mumbai - Bangalore / Chennai - Coimbatore.
You could also take a cab to Ahmedabad (4 hrs from Udaipur) and catch a flight to Bangalore, and thence to Coimbatore.
Once you're in Coimbatore you can hire a cab to go to Mettupalayam, where the toy train starts from.
