Udaipur or Jaipur?
Hi all,
Love this site. I'm planning for our trip to India in June, and looks like we only have time to go to Udaipur or Jaipur, if we want to be able to see Agra and if we don't want our trip to be too rushed. So: which would you recommend more, Udaipur or Jaipur? Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Background specifics: Fly from Delhi to Udaipur on Monday, June 16. We plan to make our way back to Delhi, for a flight out of Delhi to Calcutta on Friday June 20. So seems to be we have to choose between Udaipur and Jaipur if we want to see Agra for a day). Thanks so much! Reed |

Hello Reed and welcome to indiamike.com
I think most people will recommend Udaipur over Jaipur.
Just a couple of thoughts.... Monday, Early morning train from New Delhi to Agra Cant (depart about 06:15, arrive about 2 hours later, day in Agra, bus/taxi to Bharatpur (60kms), then overnight train to Udaipur (dep 21:30, arr about 07:00) Tuesday & Wednesday in Udaipur, then overnight train to Jaipur (dep 21.40, arr 07:10. Thursday in Jaipur, Friday, direct flight (morning, afternoon or evening) from Jaipur to Kolkata. If you don't fancy a 2nd overnight train, you can fly from Udaipur to Jaipur (plenty of options).

Udaipur:
Closer to Ranakpur, which will make you forget all about Udaipur AND Jaipur. Kumbalgarh as a stop on the way is an added bonus.

If you don't already have a flight and are starting out in Delhi and have 4 days, go to Jaipur by train as it's closer to Delhi. There's loads to see there and it's easy to spend a few days. If you have a flight to Kolkata, you can't use that day for anything much so you really only have 3 days. Don't try to cut things close. Too risky in India! |

You haven't really made it clear... Have you already booked that flight to Udaipur?

I like both cities, but if I had to choose I would go with Udaipur. While there is plenty to do in Udaipur I also find it to be quite relaxing, especially around the lake. I like Jaipur too, but I find it to be a busier city.

Thanks so much for all of your responses!
So that sounds settled--we'll take an overnight train directly from Udaipur to Agra, skipping Jaipur. On that note, does anyone know if there is a better way to make that trip besides a Udaipur to Mathura train? Sorry I hadn't been clear; we have a plane ticket for Delhi-Udaipur, but is easily refundable/transferable. Thanks! |

Overnight bus is the only way to get from Udaipur to Agra, the train between Udaipur and Bharatpur/Mathura is only timed well heading towards Udaipur, going the other way, it gets to Bharatpur at about 03:15.

Udaipur is very pretty and Ranakpur -- 90 minutes or more by car -- is glorious.
But Jaipur has more to offer one interested in history, culture, and architecture. There's the iconic Hawa Mahal, the city palace, the Jantar Mantar (observatory), and -- short distances out of town -- the Singh family tombs, the modern and spectacular Laxmi Narayan Temple, and the Amber Fort. I like both places but, if forced to choose, I'd take Jaipur. |
