Udaipur, Jodhpur Or Jaipur?
Hi there,
I need to lose one of the follwoing 3 places from my itinery for this coming (early) December. Which place of the 3 do people think I am best missing off from my journey? My partner and myself disagree so I am leaving it up to all of you to decide! ![]() |

That's a question!
We start in Delhi, Agra (just for a day) then: Jaipur (?) Udaipur (?) Jodpur (?) Jaisalmer and back to Delhi. It is only a short trip of 14 days. We have a gap of about 5 days in the middle to fit in these two. I myself prefer places a little more relaxed, but my partner prefers the more crazy cities. But each place has things we are interested in, but we can't fit them all in... at least on this visit! |

Udaipur and Jaisalmer would be hard fit in transport wise.
Agra, then overnight train to Jodhpur, then day or night train to Jaisalmer (short journey), then overnight train to Jaipur (early arrival) then fast evening train to Delhi. or Agra, day train to Jaipur, overnight train to Jaisalmer (midnight departure), day or night train to Jodhpur, then overnight train to Delhi. If you also visit Fathepur Sikri (35kms from Agra), you can get the same trains to either Jodhpur or Jaipur from Bharatpur (25kms from Fathepur Sikri), the trains depart from Bharatpur an hour later than they depart Agra. All details in Train Info thread, link in my first post. |

Hmm...all 4 cities are quite different. I would leave out Jaipur.
Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, definitely not. Udaipur scores over Jaipur in my book. |

It doesn't help that you like relaxed and your partner likes crazy!
Given that bit of info I'd suggest forgetting Udaipur and Jodhpur and do Jaipur - Pushkar - Jaisalmer. Jaipur's frenetic, and Pushkar's laidback. But that's not what you asked. On a practical note I'd say skip Udaipur for no other reason than that it's a bit of a detour. Jaipur - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer is not only alliterative, it's also a more direct route and therefore easier in your limited time. However, Udaipur (is nicer in my opinion and) might provide the kind of mix of relaxed/crazy you're looking for better than Jodhpur. So it depends if you're thinking head or heart. |

That was my thought. I would prefer Udaipur myself (I think anyway, since I haven't been to any of these palces!) but there are easy train routes from Delhi, to Agra, Jaipur, Jodpur, Jaisalmer, and back to Delhi again.
Udaipur, just being off this track a little bit just puts a bit of an obstacle in the way, although I'd like to see Kumbhalgarh as well. But I think my partner would prefer Jaipur over all. |

Hi pardon me intruding on your post, but I have a similar query.
What time scale should I allow to do Jodhpur / Udaipur / Jaislmer and then Agra if practical, but by road. I have two to three weeks max. Thanks, Aiexile |

Aiexile,
I think two weeks is OK for this. The driving times between cities are about 5 to 6 hours. Factor in stops at Kumbalgarh/Ranakpur on the Udaipur-Jodhpur leg (2 hours more). Jaisalmer - Agra however is a long slog and not possible in one go, you need to factor in two overnight stops (e.g. Jais - Bikaner - Jaipur - Agra or Jais - Jodhpur - Jaipur - Agra). Overnight train is possible if you change at Jaipur. Having done a similar trip, I'd really recommend giving yourself at least two nights at each place to get anything worthwhile out of it. Otherwise it can be a bit of a blur. |
