Trichy to Chidambaram

Which is the best way to get from Trichy to Chidambaram ?

I am planning to visit Chidambaram nataraja temple. After looking I guess, the best way to reach Chidambaram from Kochi (Ernakulam) is to take train till Trichy. But how do I proceed after that ?

One suggestion I got to reach Chidambaram from Trichy was to take

Vaigai Express to Vridhachalam @ 9:15 am which will reach Vridhachalam @ 11:30 am and from there get a bus to Chidambaram to reach there around 1:00 pm max.

Time is a constraint for me and I prefer direct buses/trains from Trichy to the Chidambaram Temple. Any better suggestions ?

The train is easy and scenic.
Taxis are also convenient, and the distance is not so far as to be a huge bill.

And busses are frequent and comfy if you pay for the good ones.

Bottom line- it's all up to you!

You can also go to Thanjavur and Kumbakonam on the way, but you know that, isn't it?

Have you got the train to Trichy booked?

Can you leave Cochin at 15:50 (or a slightly risky 17:30) on friday if it will get you to Chidambaram before 09:00 on Saturday?

Train 2625 departs Ernakulam Jn at 15:50 and gets to Erode Jn at 22:00
or
Train 6042 departs Ernakulam Town at 17:30 and gets to Erode Jn at 23:30

Train 6232 departs Erode Jn at 01:00 and gets to Mayiladuturai at 07:25
(this train starts from Mysore)

Mayiladuturai is 40 kms from Chidambaram

Thanjavur is much more fun . . . oops, that's not what you want to hear . . . erm, the buses are easy (and the roads are good).

Steven_ber , that was a great one. I can leave Cochin by 3:50 PM. Not a problem at all. I have got my mom with me, so security has to be taken care of and AFAIK since Erode Jn is a busy station, it wont be an issue. This was the route I was looking for.

Can you help me for a return trip as well ? The one I have is,

to get a bus to Vridhachalam @ 1:30 from chidambaram which will reach Vridhachalam by 3:45 pm and from there to get a auto to Railway station. Get a train called Vaigai Express which will reach trichy by 5:45 pm and to board the next train to Cochin which is @ 7:45

Any other better route ?

I'm not so sure if this is a better route because of the late change of train, but it would get you over 2 hours longer in Chidambaram...

Train 6231 departs Mayiladuturai at 17:30 and gets to Erode at 23:35

Train 2623 departs Erode at 01:30 and gets to Ernakulam Town at 06:45 (Trivandrum Mail from Chennai)
----------------------------------------

The times of some of the other trains have changed slightly....

Vaigai Express (2635) now departs Vridhachalam at 15:27 and gets to Trichy at 17:25

Train 6865 departs Trichy at 19:50 and gets to Ernakulam Town at 05:08 and to Jn not long after.

Do locals still call Ernakulam Town station Ernakulam 'North', and Junction station Ernakulam 'South'?

Thanks and yes we do :-) It is not the station which we call as North and South, but the place where the station is situated. But when we ask which place does the train stops at and answer comes like 'North' :P Enough confusion to have two major stations in just 2 km distance.
