travelling north from kolhapur-- suggestions for a beginner?

Hi, hello, how are you? The first step of my upcoming round the world trip is India, and as I've seen so many warm, helpful people providing advice on these forums, I thought I'd seek some myself.

I'm going to be in Maharashtra near Kolhapur doing some teaching volunteer work, and then meeting up with a friend probably in Varanasi, and heading to Rajasthan for a few weeks. My question is: rather than running direct up to Varanasi, are there any worthwhile destinations for a day or two (or more) along the route, which is basically central India? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks for anything you can provide!

You will love kolhapur , if you like rustic atmosphere . Well I have lived in that area for like 20 years so I can give you soem advice . You have 2 options as I see it.
1> Go to nagpur , hang around there see the sights there . I was in nagpur for few days but I have never seen the place. I have heard it's a good place that's all.
2> The other option should be hyderabad . I can vouch for hyderabad because I have been there number of times. It's worth a see and you will like it. The problem with hyderbad is that it's not on the way . You have to take a detour of 400 Km . Nagpur is smack on the road to varanasi . I have heard there are sights worth seeing in nagpur but I ma not sure , maybe members here can help us out .
