Hi,
I plan to travel India for 4 months or so from the beginning of October to early/mid January with a few friends. This will be our first time in India, and whereas I know its foolish to think we will 'see it all', are there any suggestions for a good route to take? We don't mind roughing it (we've all just finished university), and we're happy to take long journeys by train or any other means. We would like to see Ladakh (is this possible at this time of year?), and the major sites (Mumbai, darjeeling, etc), but any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks! ![]() PS. We're flying into New Delhi. |

To be quite honest, if you're expecting people to plan a four-month itinerary for you then you're not going to get many replies. It's just too much work.
I suggest that you get a guidebook and read it from cover to cover. Make a shortlist of places you'd like to see (and you can see a lot in four months) and work out a rough route that takes them all in as efficiently as possible. Then come back here and ask specific questions - e.g., should I take time to visit A en route from B to C? Is D worth a detour? They're the sort of questions that will get you a lot of useful first-hand advice. And don't forget that train bookings are already open for October. If your itinerary is going to depend upon taking certain long-distance trains then you should be thinking about it now, before the trains fill up. |

I wasn't looking for a planned route, just more of a rough idea. I'm going to pick up a lonley planet in the next couple of days, so that should give me some good ideas. Thanks for the advice about the trains, its something to bear in mind!

by end September the season for Ladakh ends as the Manali Leh highway would colse down. But if the snow is delayed for whatever reason ( as weather patterns are changing a lot) then you might be able to go there for a few days. I think your itenary would also depend on what you guys like to see and do interms of music & culture, wildlife , mountains or beaches. So once you give some of your preference it would be easier to give suggesstions. Since you will be here for 4 months you can afford to keep your plans flexiblie . Diwali , the most important and popular festival of India would be in end October so you can keep that in mind .
