Hi everybody,

Starting a new thread since I have a very specific question about a trip to Diu that I am planning. Would someone sugggest the best way to travel from Veraval to Diu?

I would be reaching Veraval at 6:15 AM by Somnath Express and would like to know if there would be cabs / taxis available for hire upto Diu. and any ballpark idea of the rates they charge?

I have been going through a couple of threads (posted i 2005-06) in this forum and they have mentioned that the roads from Veraval -- Diu are quite bad. Does someone have a more recent idea about the road conditions? and is there a more convinient way to reach Diu from Veraval than taking a cab / taxi?

I will look forward to your responses.

regards,
Abhinav.

You are right that cab is the best form of transport from Veraval to Diu. Cabs are easily available at Veraval. It cost us 1100 in Oct 06. the roads were not too good, but the average speed was about 60Kmph - hardly any traffic.
On the way, you could also stop in Somnath for an hour or so. Also this road lacks good roadside eat/drink places.

Thanks a lot, Rajeev. one question about Somnath though. I didnt know earlier that the Somnath Temple is pretty close to Veraval. So, we are planning to go there either on the first day at Veraval before starting for Diu or on our way back from Diu before catching a train to Ahmedabad from Veraval. How much time do you think we should have in our hands to have a proper darshan at the Temple? also, is there a specific time of the day we should aim at (sunrise, sunset)?

Thanks a lot.

Abhinav,

The temple is built near a beautiful beach. You can spend 1-2 hours there - darshan + beach . There is an Aarti in the morning and evening - i am not sure about the timings. We were traveling with children, and we spent the morning (2-3 hours) in Vevarval to freshen up and have breakfast, and then we went to Diu, with a stop in Somnath. If you move directly from the train station, you may catch the morning Aarti.
Also Veraval has a 'sandwich' place in the market - good for dinner on the return journey.
BTW, there are overnight sleeper buses from Ahemdabad to Diu - no personal experience, but the preferred mode of transport for local Ahmedabadis.
