Dear All,

Need advice on the travel plan. I will be visiting Pondicherry on June 27. My flight from Hyderabad will land at Chennai Airport at 9.30 Pm and I have to make onward journey to Pondicherry by Cab/Bus/Train. I need to travel in the night itself and can not stay in Chennai that night.

I did not find any night trains available. Therefore, looking for option of bus. from redbus website, I see that buses ply regularly between chennai and pondicheery but which bus stop will be nearby and easy to reach from Chennai Airport? I see the bus I intend to take will go from Saidapet at 11.30 PM but is Saidapet is nearest and easy to travel from Chennai Airport? Please help.

On the top of that, is there any website/forum where we can get travel partners so that I can consider sharing cab fare?

Regards,

there are buses that run from chennai airport to koyambedu, special services ( just like the airport service in hyderabad). The buses are not a/c or grand. Saidapet bus-stop is like a normal stop within chennai..buses have to pass through that place to go out of the city towards pondicherry.

Not sure if these special buses run at the time of your arrival, but check when you come out of the airport.

another option is a pre-paid taxi to koyambedu.

there might be other private vehicles (shared taxis) running upto Mahabalipuram (mammallapuram). From there, you have to make your way to pondicherry.

If i were you, i would get to koyambedu, and take a direct bus to pondicherry. just because of the time of arrival.

What time do you need to be in Pondy? How flexible are your arrangements?

Option 1:
Chennai - Pondicherry SG 3305 10:35 / 13:10 via BLR Thu/Sat/Sun

Option 2:
Hyderabad - Pondicherry SG 1073 10:40 / 13:30 via BLR Fri

Option 3:
Hyderabad to BLR on Wednesday / BLR to Pondy on Thursday.

SG 1023
SG 1031
SG 1073
SG 872

and then

SG 1073

Dear All, Thank you for your reply. I have few comments and questions after going through your replies. Please help me to understand the scenarios:

1.I understand that the place from where I definitely get bus is called Koyambedu/CMBT Bus Station but I was wondering why to go that far when I see the possibility to get Bus from Saidapet which seems to be nearer to Chennai Airport unless going to Saidapet is not safe and comfortable at that point of time!

2. How much money should I expect to pay to Cab if I go to Koyambedu from Airport? and time taken considering the traffic of week days at 9.30 PM in Chennai?

3. Does Private Bus Operator also operate bus from Koyambedu or only government/TN Transport Corporation Buses? Can I take the ticket there itself immediately before travel or should I need to book in advance to get best AC Volvo Buses?

4. I do not think I can buy TN Transport run buses from private sites like redbus! The only way to get tickets to TN Transport run buses is by getting registration with their website? or is there any way out?

I hope to get your quick reply to finalise my travel plans.

5. Regarding flight, both costs and time do not permit me.
Regards,

if you want to go to saidapet, you can take the local train from tirusulam station, that is right across from the airport. Maybe 10 minute walk..and might cost you less than Rs 10. you might have to walk 10 minutes to reach saidapet bus stop from saidapet local station.

Saidapet is like a roadside bus stop (mostly city buses), and if you know hyderabad, it is like APPA junction, whereas CMBT is like the APSRTC stop at Afzalgunj. Since it is late hours, the buses might not pull into the saidapet bus stop. My only concern is that you are going to a new city at somewhat late hours.

The travel time to pondicherry is about 3-4 hours, and the distance is about 180 kms. so, you will be reaching by midnight or so. Now if you go to saidapet, and there are no buses, then you will be stuck in a deserted bus stop. In CMBT, there will be crowds, and if you don't get any buses, you are at least a bit safer, and there is a lounge/hotel for you to stay, in case buses don't run at that time.

I am not sure if the buses run at the time you want, perhaps after 10PM or so...hence the precautions.

No comments on taxi fare from airport to saidapet. And no idea of private buses from CMBT, as this is a state transport bus stop.

redbus site needs to strike a partnership with the state transport to enable you to book tickets via that site. in some states, that agreement has been signed, not sure of the status in tamilnadu.

No problem, i cannot comment on timings because the tamilnadu transport requires that users create a login even to check their timetables..if they published their trips schedule freely, we could look it up.

Regards,
As you have researched the timings and departure place as 11.30pm and Saidapet from Redbus.in then you should book your tickets and board the bus as scheduled. Keep Thiruvanmiyur as standby option to board TNSTC or STC buses which start from Koyambedu.

Koyambedu buses do not cross Saidapet but go through Guindy while proceeding to Thiruvanmiyur , ECR then Pondy. Very few buses go through the Airport Highway(GST Road) to go to Pondy and stop at Pallavaram/Tambaram on way to pick up Pondy travelers.

But as you have plenty of time to catch the redbus bus you should proceed with that as planA. If you willing to rough it then proceed to Pallavaram/tambaram to catch State Transport buses .

STC/TNSTC/Muffosil go every 30 minutes frequency day and night. There are no AC buses at night of TNSTC.

I saw a couple of A/c buses at the airport taking passengers towards the city. I do not know if Koyambedu is a stop for those buses.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...EwAA&dur=13911 The only reason Koyambedu is suggested as boarding point is to get seats in unreserved buses . But the redbus is a reserved seats bus and if they are specifying Saidapet as boarding point then that would be closer to Meenambakkam(Airport).

If the Original Poster wants to save the time then only he should consider the other options.

http://chennaifocus.wordpress.com/20...nd-anna-nagar/ As for the Airport/City feeder service. The Anna Nagar West bound buses do go through CMBT Koyambedu.

adam, the board outside proclaimed as City - Airport shuttle. If I remember correct the bus was going towards Central.
