traveling south india during monsoon?

I'm in a quandry...

I'll be free to roam India from July 6th to the 15th. I'll be in Mumbai for a few days, but then where should I head? North? To Delhi? Or South, to Tamil Nadu and Chennai? Is Goa interesting at all during monsoon? Maybe Pune to Hyderabad and back? (I booked a month long ashram stay for June and am staying longer and didn't do my monsoon research...stupid, I know.)

Which part of south india ??

Avoid Kerala , Goa and Western Karnataka between June and July end. It rains continuously.

On the other hand, if you happen to like rains, it could be heaven visiting those places.
Goa in monsoon is totally different from the usual touristy place it is round the year. It's more serene, fresh and enjoyable (depends on you)...
moving along the west coast could be an interesting options, start from Mumbai and move south till the land's end...

However, be prepared for incessant rains as lonelyaztec mentions in addition to getting wet, bad roads and pot-holes.

Thank you for the insights.

I don't think I will mind the rain, I just don't want to be too encumbered by it. Does anyone think that Panjim and Old Goa are worth visiting in the rain? And what about travelling by train to Pune from Mumbai and then on to Hyderabad?

The thing is, my flight out of India is from Mumbai to Delhi and out. Should I change this flight to spend more time in the north where it rains less?

Indeed. Possible Tamil Nadu this side of the mountains, I'm not sure.

When we visited wet-and-cold Ooty last July we only had to head bck down to the east to find dry-and-hot again.

Not might --- it will rain in Kerala.

Unlike Chennai, you can set your calendar by the Kerala monsoon. Hence the wonderful lush greenery of the place

ooty is wet and cold in July.

Anyone who truly loves British weather will enjoy. But I think such a person is unlikely to come to Southern India.

Shortly after my July visit to Ooty last year the weather became truly dangerous, with some bridges destroyed, roads blocked, and the mountain railway out of action for months.

Take the monsoon seriously, people. Up in the hills, take it very seriously!

TN from april till june end will be hot and uncomfortable except for places i mentioned. Chennai surprisingly is little bit cooler this summer ( i dont know whats in store in future ) . Orissa should be hot too..
