Dear All,
Am planning to go on a 2 month trip to india from mid december and wish to travel and see as much as i can - not on the tourist trail. Probrably will be travelling with my girlfriend. Any advice about particular trails that would be worth looking into???? I know this is a rather vague question - but its where to start!!!!!!!! Many thanks in advance |

Dan, welcome to indiamike.
Perhaps you should browse the destinations fora here after deciding what kind of places you want to visit, and we can help build an itinerary around that... also which are your must do's. Weatherwise December is colder in the North and central India, (and colder in the hills) and pleasant/warm in the South, and the coastal areas. |

The idea of staying away from the tourist trail may sound seductive but the truth of the matter is , you would be denying yourself of much of India's culture. Also the diet and lack of things to do would quickly turn to boredom. Small town India is just that they live with the daylight, so often everyone is in bed by 9pm!
The diet is also a bit restrictive after a while especially if you haven't sampled Indian food yet! of course you can meet people but you can do that just as easily in any tourist spot! My advice would be to go for the smaller less frequented destinations in order to minimise your exposure to the ills of mass tourism! Here's a list of a few places that spring to mind in no particular order! Almora Rishikesh Bharatpur (for the Taj Mahal, Birdpark, Fatehpur Sikri and Deeg) Bundi Chittor Khumbhalgarh Ranakpur Falna Mt Abu Shekawati OR Bharatput Gwalior Orchha (Datia, Sonagir) Bhopal Mandu Maheshwar Ajanta Caves Ellora Caves (Aurangabad, Deogiri Fort, Bibi-Ka-Maqbara) Mumbai Ganpatipule Malvan Goa (Agonda) Badami Aihole Pattadakal Hampi Gokarna Murdeshwar Madakeri Bidar The list is endless so why not have a browse and see which areas take your fancy and I'll try and help with places in those particular areas! |

Great post Cyberhippie, if I was ever capable of such a post it would take me hours to do all those links.
