Hi,

I'm looking to take the Himalayan Queen train from Delhi to Shimla in early to mid September. After that I'm planning on spending 3 weeks or so in the Himalayas, gradually heading eastward to the Nepali border at Banbasa.

I've heard that trains require to be booked a long time in advance, but I was wondering whether it would be possible to navigate that part of India by bus alone? If this is the case, would travelling here by bus be a good idea/consistently reliable/better than any other form of transportation?

Thanks in advance,
Tom.

Well if you are heading east from Shimla, and planning to stay in the hills traversing via the northern most roads, the only way you can do it is by bus or shared taxi, or your own taxi...anyways well worth the effort as this west to east transverse is a good journey with plenty of opportunities for stops and overnight halts. Moreover it is not tourist season or busy so you should have little problem getting about, or accommodation and so on.

The Himalayan Queen will run only till Kalka and after that you have to take a narrow gauge train from Kalka to Shimla.
