Transportation through Rajasthan? 2 weeks in January

Hey there,

We could use some help in determining how to get from city to city (thinking trains) in Rajasthan and if we are going in the right order. The only fixed dates are our arrival and departure in Delhi, and a friend's wedding in Jaipur (Dec 26 & 27).

We’re not looking at roughing it, being our honeymoon, and are pretty flexible with the itinerary. We’re thinking we’re in the “high budget” range defined by the forum rules.

Our proposed itinerary:

Dec 22 – Land in Delhi
Dec 23 – Explore Delhi
Dec 24 – Neemrana Fort Palace
Dec 25 – Agra & Fatepur Sikri
Dec 26 – Jaipur
Dec 27 – Jaipur
Dec 28 – Ranthambhore
Dec 29 – Ranthambhore
Dec 30 – Bundi
Dec 31 – Udaipur
Jan 1 – Udaipur/Pushkar
Jan 2 – Jodhpur
Jan 3 – Jodhpur
Jan 4 – Jaisalmer
Jan 5 – Jaisalmer
Jan 6 – Delhi
Jan 7 – Delhi
Jan 8 – Fly home

Thoughts, anyone?

Thanks!
Adam

Try this site's Planes, Trains, and Automobiles section, notably the "sticky" posts on top there. Will be helpful in determining train routes. See esp. Train information. Your route looks roughly sensible to me but I can't say I've visited all these places. I found busing Rajasthan generally easier and often quicker. If money is no objection then a car and driver could be an idea. I'm a sucker for the trains mind.

nb It will be the holidays, not sure how this reflects on N. India train travel. And your period isn't long. You might consider looking into an Indrail pass, linked to in the link above. Could save you a lot of headaches. Booking it (or going through the process) would presumably also reveal where you can or cannot go by train.

Alternatively, just book everything ahead if you can but you don't have much time left. But on a short relaxed honeymoon trip over this period, get it sorted out before by all means. (I never do mind, just a friendly tip.) Or stick to the buses indeed, I don't know how it is today but they'd generally be a bit more easy to get a hold of and seldom booked out.

You are exploring DELHI on start of tour and then again having two days in last. Do try to have a visit at AKSHARDHAM TEMPLE- I am sure this is worth a visit.

Otherwise, your plan seems to be fine. Avoid traveling by road if possible. Train travel is fine but as one senior suggested- get booked as soon as possible. You can fly IN from Udaipur to delhi also but as we said....get booked as soon as possible.

I think travel by train is comfortable and less travel phatique as compare to road travel. On a honeymoon trip...travel should be as comfortable as possible.

No you must visit the ISKON Krishna Temple and not Akshardham.
Why?
On a honeymoon, the Radha Krishna legend is far more apt then Swaminarayan's AK-dham.

Well, I am posting some images and I think you will like it. choice is of traveler...he/she/they may choose what they like.

Here you can sit in lawns...and admire the mind which builds this temple not from religious point of view.

When I was here- I liked its serenity and art where all religions have been given a place.

I do feel that this is worth to spend a winter afternoon in peace !!

You're right (and thanks for those temple pics, looks good!) I can only say again that I found the buses pretty practical there but then maybe I don't have much luxury demands. I did some car rides in the region and they were just fun, different look at the countryside too. Again, don't remember much about the comfiness of it though.

I think if I had some cash to spare and wanted an easy trip I'd probably go for a car + driver deal with some reputable company, would also rid you of any booking hassle. But... to each their own right.

I thought I'd found all the 'errors'....

The above tariff is per day, not per week.
