Transport from A to B help
Hello, I was on here a while ago with a ridiculously long plan for 3 months in India. After all your help and advice I have come up with a plan that I think will be much more manageable than the original!
I have been checking this site and other and using my Rough Guide & Map to sort it into order. Im starting in Rajasthan and then down to the South working my way back up the West coast. After checking as far as I can I have worked out how to get from A to B for some of the places but I am a little lost on some of them. I know I may not be able to fit it all in but thats cool, just want an idea of where I want to head. I was wondering if anyone can help fill in the blanks (every where there is a question mark)? I am arriving at Delhi on New Years Day 09 and return home 27th March 09. I am female travelling alone, so this is why I feel its important to have a kind of plan and to know how to get to each place. Ok here we go DELHI Taxi or bus? To MANDAWA Train to BIKANER Train/Bus? To JAISALMER Train to JODHPUR Bus? To RANAKPUR Bus to UDAIPUR Train to CHITTAUGARH Train to BUNDI KOTA From here how do I get to below? JHANSI ORCCHA KHAJURAHO Bus to GWAILOR Train to AGRA Regular bus to FATEPUR SIKRI From here how do I get to below? JAIPUR Train to DELHI Fly to BANGALORE Train to MYSORE (Chamundi Hill) Bus to OOTY Train to COONOOR From here how do I get to below? MUNNAR Bus? To PERIYAR KUMILY From here how do I get to below KOVALAM Bus? To VARKALA Bus? To KOLLAM or KOTTAYAM Bus/Boat? To KOCHI - Bus/Boat? To THRISSUR Bus/Train? To KANNUR Bus? To UDUPI - Bus? To GOKARN - Bus? To PALOLEM - Bus? To CAVELOSSIM - Bus? To ARAMBOL - Bus? To KOLHAPUR - Bus? To GRANAPATIPULE VELNESHWAR - Bus/Train? To MAHABALSHWAR Train to MATHERAN Train to MUMBAI Fly to DELHI Fly home. Grateful for any help and advise as usual. Becky.

One thing you might try is having a look at the Lonely Planet, which will fill in some of those blanks for you! Sometimes you have to do this "backwards," that is, look at Munnar to see how to get to Coonor.
Travelling around Goa, you are almost certain to take buses, rather than trains.

LOL. This won't do my board reputation any good, but seeing this I was like... You really expect us to figure out all those connections?
Just go for it, it won't be all that hard to figure out on the ground. You'll likely find yourself dropping some destinations or come up with new ones as you go along, it's all part of the fun. Have fun, I'm quite sure you will. (ps I see you have three months anyway. I tend to have to do my best to keep track of the days not to mention weeks after a week or two, I mean come on, you really don't need more than a general plan, who wants to have it all set in stone.) ps Speaking too harshly again I realize: I understand your concerns of being a solo female traveler and so on. But really, there are so many doing it; and for a longer period, trying to have it all pre-planned just kind of defeats the purpose, or so it seems to me. Others will have a different approach, yes, always, of course. But personally, going on a holiday the first thing on my mind is to leave the calendar at home (and not visit any internet cafes), you betcha. (ps That is a figure of speech of course. Carrying a calendar precisely to keep track of where the blurdy hell you are in time is in fact a very good idea of course. Just promise yourself to not look at it more than once a week )And then WWU's sig seems more apt than ever: The map is not the territory, indeed, indeedy.

Thought of sharing what I know !
And for all the places you have mentioned right from Kollam , Kottayam , Cochin, thrissur, Kannur until Mangalore/ udupi , bus frequency is really really More and it's NH-17 highway which is excellent all through but winding !. After Udupi this highway becomes bad in patches until Gokarna BANGALORE – Train to MYSORE (Chamundi Hill) – Bus to OOTY – Train to COONOOR – From here how do I get to below? You could continue in the same toy train upto Mettupalaiyam and catch a bus to Coimbatore [1 Hour Journey] OR from coonoor , you could catch a direct bus to Coimbatore [ This is fastest option but less scenic when compared to train travel]. From Coimbatore, there are direct buses to Munnar which runs Via Chinnar and this is the shortest way to reach Munnar. MUNNAR – Bus? To Yes, From Munnar you need to depend on bus to reach Thekkady PERIYAR – KUMILY – From here how do I get to below From Kumily/ Thekkady, you could get a bus to Kottayam followed by train or bus to Trivandrum to reach Kovalam KOVALAM – Bus? To VARKALA – Bus? To KOLLAM or KOTTAYAM – Bus/Boat? To From Kollam Or Kottayam, you could catch any of the day trains to reach Ernakulam JN / Cochin and bus frequency is too much in this route ! KOCHI - Bus/Boat? To From Ernakulam , you could catch a train OR even you could catch any of the numerous Buses which ply in this route to reach thrissur . THRISSUR – Bus/Train? To From Thrissur you could take a train to kannur for comfot Or buses as usual ! KANNUR – Bus? To From Kannur, Try to board train until Mangalore and from Mangalore , there are numberous buses to udupi [just an hour] and in Mangalore, you could take a auto from Railway station to "State Bank" bus stand [ Minimum fare / 12 rs ]from where you have "N" number of private buses towards udupi ! UDUPI - Bus? To From Udupi, If at all if you could adjust for the train timings [ Frequency is relatively less] , it will be a great experience Or else you could catch bus but this stretch is normally below average . I did this a year back and it's horrible at several places !But Traveling this stretch in bus will give a unique experience of experiencign Maravanthe beach and for around 1/2 km or so the highway passes very very close to the sea and the views are fantastic and also If possible include Murdeshwar . If you take train, you need to Get down at "Gokarna Road" railway station and we paid 150 rs for reaching gokarna for a full taxi ! GOKARN - Bus? To Hope this helps. |

Exceptional, indeed. Makes me regret any bout of sarcasm I ever had.
Keep it up, PMV (And Snonymous btw, I think they're quite on a par, certainly when it comes to the south.)Last edited by machadinha : Jul 16th, 2008 at 22:34. |

I did a similar three month grand tour between Nov and Feb through more or less the same places. Without going into too much details here you're welcome to look at my blog and you can see whether I took buses, trains or indeed had a nightmare getting either. If you need to know more details about how I got between places PM me and I'll try to remember!

My goodness what a wonderful response!
Wonderwomanusa thanks for your reply. I have used the Rough Guide in the backwards approach, but it might be worth reading a Lonely Planet to see if I can get any more information. Thanks for the tip. Machadinha no not for a moment did I expect someone to work out all of those, it was just if anyone know one or two maybe. Of course I think Pmvelu has shocked us all on that one! Dont worry Im not setting anything in stone just working out the places I would like to see if I get a chance. I am a bit of a planner and I guess Im just getting so excited and I want to know I can fit it all in. You are quite right though I should relax a little and see what happens when I get there, which Im sure I will. Ive no concerns about travelling alone, I hope it didnt come across like that. This is all new and exciting as I say and I have never travelled before so Im not sure how to approach it. Im sure when I get there I will settle in and take it as it comes. Pmvelu hands down to you! Fantastic, thank you so much, I thought I might get a couple of replies but nothing as detailed as that.Much appreciated it really is! It helps me work out places to visit knowing where I can travel to and where I might have to miss out. Buck Cheers for that Im going to check it out now. You may be hearing from me lol Thank you all for taking the time to reply |
