Hello, I'm planning a 15 day trip to India. Was originally focussing on Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Delhi, Agra).

I heard from a friend that there is a train between Mumbai and Goa that is incredible (over 1200 bridges/tunnels in a 12 hour trip). Is anyone familiar with this? Would it be worth cutting part of Rajasthan to do this?

Thank you!

Karkan Train

Hello, I did a little more research - I think the train route recommended to me was the Karkan Train between Mumbai and Goa. Is the train ride itself worth the trip to this area - I would have to skip out on a few days in Rajasthan to make this work.

Thank you for any advice

Not an expert on trains.

But, specially if you are travelling in or around the monsoons, yes, it will be worth cutting a bit of Rajasthan for this.

The only problem is that you have a two week trip, already crowded.

Very Scenic journey.

Yes, if your trip is during or just after the monsoons it's worth taking the train from Mumbai to Goa (Madgaon).

If you want to really enjoy the journey take the day train Mandovi express, but you will have to spend your full day time in train. However if you want to save time & also enjoy the scenic beauty take the Konkan Kanya express (Leaves Mumbai CST at 11.00 PM) & reaches Madgaon at around 12.00 Noon. However from early morning 6.00 or from the time day breaks you will be able to enjoy the scenery around. If you decide to go on the journey please book second class tickets only as you will not be able to enjoy scenery from AC class.

Some pics. are attached which i clicked during one of my many journeys on the route.

Ronak.

The train leaves Mumbai CST @ 6.55 AM. You will have to spend atleast 4 - 5 hrs. time at the Station or at the Airport, wherever you prefer. You can spend time at the waiting room (Railway station) or can book a room for 4 - 5 hrs. somewhere near the station.

The train ticket would cost you less then Rs. 300 (one way) for second class.

OK...300RS ist cheap...but hows the 2nd class? Is it good or do you think ill go for 1st class...i want seats where its safe and i can sleep witohut be worried over that some takes my luggage etc...Can i get my own traincompartment...?Do i have to pre book it? or can i just go to the station and get the ticket...

And how far is the trainstation from the airport by taxi/ metro (is there metro in Munbai?) ..ive never been to Mumbai-side..but been to Delhi lots o times....from my experience its takes atleast 2 hrs to get out from the airport (after all the checking/immigration/luggage...) dont you think it will be the same at Mumbai Airport...???

Or do you think its good experience for me to stay one or two days in Mumbai for shopping ? The thing is Im attending a wedding in Punjab on 14th Oktober so my plans are

nr 1: to get a flight to delhi / get to KERELA and stay there 8-9 days /get back to Delhi do some shopping and then go to Punjab for 4-5 days /then take my flight back to Finland.

nr 2: get to MUMBAI / get to GOA for 8-9 days /get back to MUMBAi and do some shopping /take the plan to delhi and then get to Punjab and then take a plan back to MUMbai...?

Second class is safe on this Konkan route. Now a days you don't have first class in most of the trains. However you have AC compartments but the windows in this compartments are sealed, so you won't be able to enjoy the scenery. Carry a chain & lock so that you can tie your luggage with it. Pre bokking is necessary.

Currently Metro is not there but is under process which could take another 5 - 7 yrs to built it. But we do have Suburban trains which carry passengers from the Suburbs to Town. But you can always take a Taxi from the airport to Mumbai CST station which could cost approx. Rs. 400. I have no idea about how much time should it take to come out from International Airport.

It's up to you what you prefer Kerala or Goa.
