Hold that thought: from my maps the Ghats are more inland. You might have a pretty ride through the foothills though, maybe the others can tell. You'd presumably already have crossed them coming in from Chennai too. (Hm they're both night rides I see now though
)

I have used the above facility some time last month. Reservation clerk initially did not understand this mutli train thing, but later supervisor clarified to the clerk.

There was also the option of going overnight from Chennai to Mysore (I hear Yoga is big in Mysore), then having a day in Mysore, then an overnight train to Hubli in time to catch a train that runs 4 days a week to Madgaon (arriving at about 14:00), then you'd have to get a bus to Panjim, then a bus to Mapusa. There's a fast train (Shatabdi) to Mysore, that would give half a day in Mysore, but the train departs Chennai Central at 06:00, so probibly no good for you.

The most direct route by Rail is
Chennai to Guntakal by the three Mumbai trains Guntakal to Madgaon by the Amaravati exp [4 days a week] 6012 Mumbai Exp dep Chennai 11:45, arrival Guntakal 20:45 wait at Guntakal [big junction, waiting room available] from 20:45 to 04:00 2847 Amaravati Exp dep Guntakal 04:05 arrival Madgaon 13:43 If you DONT want to spend time at Guntakal.... wait at Guntakal 20:45 to 01:00 [4 hrs] take the train no 7429 or 7430 at 01:00 hours reaching Londa at 10:53 Londa to Panaji is via Natl Hwy no 4A [good road] 90 kms Train No 7430 [daily] Rayalaseema Exp departs Tirupati at 19:15 and arrives Londa at 10:53 the next day. Chennai to Tirupati is 125 m & lotsa aircon bus services and taxis available througout the day taking you in two and a half hrs or less. If so inclined, you may go for darshan of the famous Lord Tirupati ... Incidentally, Hampi [station is Hospet] lies ON this route. If willing, disembark at Hospet for a day, [arrival 05:10] and then proceed to Londa the next day, same train. One ticket will suffice for all this, but separate resevations have to be booked. [reservation slip with zero amount cannot bo done on net, only in person] If I were to choose, I would start post breakfast at 07:00, reach Tirupati by 09:30, have darshan in one of the "paid" ticket darshan lines by 12:30 [to save time] and then roam around the forest on top of Tirupati [its really beautiful and clean, thanks to the "holy" aura.. people dont litter]. After this, take the 19:15 train to Londa [arr 10:43] to reach Panaji by lunch time the next day. Not a strenuous journey at all, considering that you will be asleep in aircon comfort for at least seven hours out of fifteen & a half.....

See http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/maps/all_india.htm . Guntakal is a major railhead in Andhra Pradesh. Madgaon/Margao would be in Goa.
I assume you could book the whole trip in Chennai (or Pondicherry even for that matter), provided a little time ahead. Going by Hospet (not far from Guntakal) I agree a drop-off at Hampi wouldn't go amiss. Give it several days if you can. |

If you see the map, its a mildly curved line [close enough for a straight line]
Quote:
ticket booking can be done after you touch IndiaShaktipalooza has suggested train no 6352 [dep Villupuram 15:40][Tue & Sat only] arrival Guntakal 03:40. Your next connection, the 2847 Amaravati Exp departs at 04:10 from Guntakal [the very next train] and reaches Madgaon at 13:43. It cannot be more direct than this, even Chennai is eliminated from this journey... and the aircon ticket [thru ticket] wont be more than 1000 rupees max. Even if you but TWO separate tickets from USA itself, [just to make sure], it wont cost you more than Rs 1232 [654+578] for 3rd AC tickets. There is another alternate via Bangalore... but the train timings are inconvenient, and many of them now start from Yeshwantpur, slightly out of the city limits |

I thank all of you and of course I will write down these names!
but if I don't get the gig in Goa, then all this is a moot point -- but it will be helpful for someone else! ![]() however, I DO want to end up in Kerala getting ayurvedic massages on a daily basis! ![]() |

2601 Mangalore mail dep Chennai Central 20:15,
arrival Mangalore 12:20 Wait up to 14:40 at Mangalore [2 hrs] 2620 Matsyagandha Exp dep Mangalore 14:40 arrival Madgaon 20:45 A 24 hour journey with a layover at a civilized hour. I think you can remember "Mangalore" at least, it sounds similar to Bangalore, which is now Bengaaloooroo ![]() |
