train from pondy to goa?

am in preliminary stages of planning a trip at the end of the year into January 2008. Planning on Chennai for about a week, then to Pondy to chill for a few days. now here's my question:

I am in the intial stages of plans to teach a yoga workshop at a yoga shala in Goa. The shala is close to Mapusa, where I read the Thivim (sp?) station is, but when I try to research it on the train site, the station name does not come up.

Can I train it from Pondy area to Goa? I read that the nearest station to Pondy is Villupuram (36 kms), but can I get to Goa from there? I'm assuming I can bus it or hire a car from Pondy to the Villupuram station....

Then I want to train it from Goa to Kerala, then back to Chennai. If I don't teach in Goa, probably won't go there...but am curious as to the logistics of getting from Pondy to Goa.

looking at LP and Rough Guide, I'm beginning to think it ain't gonna be easy! but then maybe I should fly to Kerala from Goa....AAAARGH!

all sugggestions are welcome!

I think your best bet YG, if it's direct route you're looking for is to backtrack to Chennai, where I believe there is a weekly train to Goa!
From Villapuram you could train it to Mangalore stop there for the night and take the morning train to Goa!! Which departs at 6.50am

607 MS MANGALORE EX *VILLUPARAM JN 00:40 MANGALORE 22:00

Both trains stop at Madgaon which is just a short hop away from Mapusa!

well, DUH! OK, call me stupid! but only one train a week from Chennai to Goa? would seem like there would be more given Goa's popularity....but more than one station in Goa I think??

yes, direct would be the best, I guess...but I think the train from Chennai goes thru Mangalore anyway....

thanks you guys....

I seem to remember a Pondy-Bangalore train being mentioned somewhere, but it may have been a planned train (in the rail budget), I'll see what I can find out. (but this would be a 10+ hour trip)

From bangalore there are 3 overnight trains to Goa (Madgaon), this would be a 15 hour trip.

I think there is also a Trichy-Mangalore overnight train, I'll check.

Either way, it's a long journey.

The Chennai-Goa train goes via Bangalore and Hubli.

I think train 7227 no longer runs, it changed to a superfast (begining with a 2) and the times changed.

Train 168 is very likely a temporary train.

thanks again for all your suggestions but the time factor of the train might be a factor....Rameswaram to Chennai was 17 hours, but looking at this travel time...jeez louise!

one little thing that complicates matters is that I may have some of my yoga students with me...I would have to get them back to Chennai to tuck them in and hold their hands before I leave for Goa or Kerala.....

might be better to fly if this yoga gig in Goa comes thru!

Does the following sound tempting? (as you'll be starting from Chennai)

Train 2601 departs Chennai Central daily at 20:15 and gets to Mahe at 08:52. (2A, 3A, FC, SL.)

Mahe is part of the Union Territory of Pondicherry; you would have 12 hours to check out the area, or to have a look at Tellicherry (now called Thalassery and situated 9kms north of Mahe)

Train 6346 departs Tellicherry daily at 20:25 and gets to Thivim at 07:08. (2A, 3A, SL.)

If you bought a single ticket for each of these trains, the cost would be Rs 1556 in 3-tier air con, if you bought a 'through' ticket covering both trains, the cost would be Rs 1163.

You can only book a through ticket at a ticket office in India, and not on the Internet, and you'd have to book train 2601 through to Tellicherry. (you can still get off at Mahe)

See the following thread for details of how to book a through ticket (the same way as you book a 'break of journey' ticket. (it's as easy as booking a single ticket and can be done in Pondy).

Understanding Reservation Forms.

I'd read a newspsper article around six months back, which stated that through "multi train" tickets with the benefit of "telescoping" [lower] fares are about to end. In the past, I have used this. Now I don't know whether Railways have implemented the "new" proposed rule.

Maybe V Srinivasa Prasad would know...

that does sound tempting, steve, but if Avid is correct...then what?? and what is there to see in Tellicherry? (since it is neither in LP or Rough Guide)

Thalasseri is a lazy small fishing town, or it used to be so some 1.5 decades ago. There's not a lot going on, but it's interesting for a short stay and doesn't see a lot of (western) visitors. It used to be in my LP alright.

I spent half a day there looking for a place to swim, between fishermen staring you up & beaches full of turds this was out of the question though. I assume if you take the train northwards from there this might take you through or past the Western Ghats, beautiful area. If it does I'd advice you to get out at some random spot and explore. I can't be sure if the train passes by here though.
