To Punjab and beyond

Hello, we are flying to Mumbai on 10th June and plan on spending a day or two there until we organize our transport to Chandigarh, from there to Jalandhar. I would love to hear from anyone currently over there as to a suggested route which will take us eventually to Amritsar.I know the heat will be pretty merciless so that will determine how long we spend in Punjab. From there up to Jammu and Kashmir for hopefully 2 weeks around Srinigar, Gulmarg etc.I hope to run in to other IMers,so don't be shy.

the train connections are pretty good between mumbai and punjab, there are daily 2/3 trains departing everyday

for chandigarh, paschim express is a good option (no 2925) but it leaves from bandra terminus ( a suburb in mumbai) u will then be traveling thru 5 states, mah, guj, madhya pradesh, delhi and punjab

tickets shouldn't be a problem if you avail of the foreign tourist quota, but you the jouney will last anyhwere between 18 to 28 hours depending on the train and you have to deicde if you would enjoy that or not.

also jalandhar, chandigarh and amritsar are quite close if i have not mistaken (2/3 hrs by rail/road)

wouldn't know how to get to kashmir from there.

There is only one direct train between Mumbai and Chandigarh, and that is the 2925A Paschim Express. ( Holiday specials excluded)

You can get from Chandigarh to Jalandhar via Ambala Cantt.

Its pretty easy to get to Amritsar from Jalandhar, as there are direct rail and road routes. From Amritsar you can travel upto Jammu by direct train and from there by road to Srinagar.

Plenty of buses on the Chandigarh Jullundhur route. The trip by car is just over 2 hours. Plenty of buses from Jullundhur to Amritsar which is about a 1.5 hour trip.
