Three Weeks July 17th - Aug 6th

I've never been to india before, and planning this trip is becoming stressful, because there is too much I want to do. I have a tendency to want to do/see too much. Here is my current plan:

Delhi (3 days)
Agra (1 day) - over night train to varanasi
Varanasi (2 days) over night train to jaipur
Jaipur (3 days) over night train to jodphur
Jodphur (2 days) on the morning of the third day bus to Mt Abu
Mt Abu (2 days) on the third day bud to Udaipur
Udaipur (3 days) Somehow get to Ellora Caves
Ellora Caves (1 day) Train to bombay
Bombay (3 days)

I think that's perhaps too cluttered. I am travelling with my best friend, and I don't want to have him highly annoyed by my crazyness. As far as what i'm really interested in seeing. Well, I have a friend in delhi, so I really want to spend three days there. The ellora caves seems fascinating to me, as well as the Jain temples at Mt abu. I like food more than anything else. I really want to go to Varanasi, but it seems like so much travel. Is it worth it for two days? What should I cut out? Are there other close by cities I should consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

3 days in Delhi might be a little too long. Do you have plans on how you're going to spend your time there?

Not sure. I guess mostly hanging out with my friend, and adjusting to the time zone. I've heard delhi can be kinda blah, but staying with a native has to have some sort of charm to it. Do you think? Most of the places I have circled in my guide book are markets that I want to check out, so I guess it's definitely easy to cut a day off of delhi. I'm just wondering how much pressure my friend is going to give me to stay.

To me the itinerary looks fine- making the most of the avaialbe time . One suggestion: maybe you could alter the travle plans a little to goto Udaipur from Jodhpur instead of Mt abu. And then proceed to Mt Abu from Udaipur. Then you can catch a train to Bombay from Mt Abu (Abu Road). This will not only take care of the somehow get to Ellora from Udaipur, but will give you a chance to spend some time at the jain temple complex at Ranakpur on way to Udaipur from Jodhpur.

Also if you want to really pack a punch, you could reduce a day at Jaipur and increase one at Jodhpur to fit in a visit to Jaisalmer !!

train from Abu Road to Ajanta/Ellora

There are two trains from Abu road : one on Tuesday morning at 2 am (Train number 6126 Jodhpur Chennai egmore express)and one on Sat morning at 2 am (7038, Bikaner Secunderabad Exp) . Both these goto Jalgaon (reaching at abt 5 pm) that is 60km from Ajanta.
