Trying to clean up my (way way too short!!!) itinerary and wondering if this is over-ambitious:
May 24 Mumbai (visiting friends who have been living there) May 25 Mumbai May 26 Mumbai May 27 Mumbai May 28 Mumbai May 29 Mumbai, overnight train to New Delhi May 30 - Delhi May 31 - Agra June 1 - to Kalka June 2 - train to Shimla, drive to Mandi (stay in Mandi) June 3 - Mandi June 4 - to Amritsar June 5 - Amritsar, train back to Delhi overnight June 6 - Delhi to Airport |

Would it save you time if you moved Agra to the end of your trip, after Amritsar? Because going from Delhi to Agra to Kalka/Shimla, you end up having to double back.
As for the whole concept. Is there a reason you've decided that you must BOTH visit friends in Mumbai for a week AND visit the far north of the country (and so many stops on the itinerary)? Because it seems like you'd get more out of your trip if you spent that second week checking out something a little closer to Mumbai. |

Thanks for the input - I was told that I should head to the hill country to try and avoid the heat of the plains (at least for a few days!).
Also I wanted to see the taj... do you think I'm being overambitious? |

I don't think you're being 'overambitious', necessarily, as you do have two weeks. I just don't think you're prioritizing all that well. Also, you're only in India for 2 weeks; the heat isn't exactly going to kill you.
If you only want to escape the heat, there are closer options. There are a few hill stations in Maharashtra - your Mumbai friends will probably know about them. You could also look into somewhere like Coorg or Ooty, both of which are possibly more convenient to Mumbai than Shimla is. If your heart is set on the Taj Mahal, why not fly between Mumbai and Delhi? Could you convince your Mumbai friends to come along to the Himalayas and Agra, thus killing 2 birds with one stone? |
