Southern India Itinerary suggestions

Hello,

I am going to arriving in Mumbai on the 3rd December and will be leaving again on the 3rd January.

How ambitious is it to try and visit each of the places within the time period? I was hoping to visit some of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well but perhaps this will leave me too pushed for time.

I have budgetted for a number of internal flights but want to know whether it will difficult to travel around the Christmas period without booking in advance.

Thanks in advance.

You can still make it to either Tamilnadu or Kerala or partly both. It all depends upon as to how many days you wish to spend especially in Goa and Hampi.

Smile Southern India trip advice

Hi,

I am going to be arriving in Chennai on the 3rd of December. I am then going to be flying out of Mumbai on the 3rd January. Please could you give me some advice on the following itinerary:

Chennai - 2 days
Mallumapuram - 2 days
Pondicherry & Chidambaram - 2 days
Tanjore - 2 days
Madurai - 3 days
Mysore - 2 days
Bangalore -3 days
Hampi - 2 days
Goa - 5 days
Mumbai - 2 days

Is this too ambitious, should I skip? Please can advise on the best method of travel between each of these places?

Thanks in advance.

No it's quite doable (you still have 6 days extra; which is good). You could even mix in a bit of Kerala and if you skip Bangalore (why not I would say)you can go from Mysore to Belur and Halebid and then on to Hampi.

For more suggestions read our journal (the part before the kids came).

Have fun,

Hans

Hans is right: skip Bangalore and see Belur and Halebid, and try to see Ajanta and Ellora on the way up to Mumbai.

Southern India Itinerary suggestions

Hi,

I am going to be in India from 4th December to 3rd January. I fly into Chennai and fly out of Mumbai. Please can you advise me on my itinerary and tell me whether I’ve chosen the best travel arrangements and also whether I should skip or spend longer in a particular place.

Reading some of travel posts I am aware that I may need to book some of my tickets in advance over this busy period, especially if I am going to be travelling up the west coast during December, can you tell me where this will be needed. I would also like to be able to a build in some flexibility where possible as trains can be cancelled and plans can go awry! I am not on too tight a shoe-string so if a taxi or a flight would save time, or allow more flexibility then please say.

Here is my proposed itinerary:

December 4th – December 6th: Chennai

December 6th – Bus to Mamallapuram

December 8th – Bus to Pondicherry

December 12th - Bus to Chidambaram

December 14th – Bus to Tanjore

December 17th – Madurai (What’s going to be the best way of getting here from Tanjore?)

December 21th – Mysore – Bus, or maybe a flight if it will save time. If I book a flight have far in advance would I need to do it?

December 24th – Vagator (I have a hotel booked here for the 24th so I definitely need to get there by the evening of the December 24th .)

December 28th – bus to Panji – train to Hospeth – Hampi

(Would it be better to go to Hampi before heading for Vagator?)

January 1st – Mumbai

3rd January – Fly home

I hope these details are not too vague. I really want to see Madurai and Hampi so please advise if I need to cut out some parts of my itinerary to do them justice.

Thank you in advance your help.

I'm in the same boat

I have 2 weeks penned down for kerala / TN in early january, following 2 weeks in maharashtra & karnataka with work colleagues. I am travelling with wife & 10yr child, who have never seen the delights of india - I've been a few times for work, though a lot of that time was spent looking out the window at yet another trip to the office.

Given that we really value peace & quiet, I've come up with a plan something like
- overnight stay in calicut following a road journey from mysore,
- a week in alapuzzha split between the beach and somewhere on the lake, with an overnight stay on a boat,
- 2 nights in munnar,
- overnighting madurai and leaving from chennai.

I now realise that we're really spoilt for beaches here in oz, and would probably be disappointed at alleppey beach in light of the review in anyone been to Alleppey beach?.
But staying in the same place for more than 3 days causes the boy to go stir-crazy..

Can I ask for suggestions here?

TIA,
P
