South India, jungle & beaches with children...any suggestions?

Hi there, got so much help of this site last year i am back again, refreshed after my rollercoaster ride in india and ready to do it all again...this time with my partners children so a lil advice (and patience) is needed. We are taking the kids on there first backpacking trip, well the eldest is 18 so i had better not say "kids", the Beth is 10 and we will be flying out on the 10th February for 1 month. Flying into Bangalore then out of Mumbai. We would like to give them a jungle and beach experience with a few train journeys in between. My plans so far are to get an overnight train over to coimbatore then to kodai or ooty for up to a week, while there we would like to see animals in a park as such...any suggestions or can you even do that easily from here, is there plenty to interest children or any other suggestions for alternate areas that are fairly easy to access, then we plan to go over to the coast, last year we ended our trip in Palaolam which we loved as it was fairly quite and nice beaches, our plans are to go back there at some point but would love to hear about any other favourite beaches along the east coast that are child friendly...ie clean beach, shallow waters other activities to do and a friendly laid back kind of atmosphere, not too touristy i would go straight to north Goa for that but not my scene.
