South India in 3 weeks?

I am going to a wedding in Kerala at the end of my trip.
(I don't want to wear myself out before the wedding, but would like to see the best of the South, some historical sites, natural beauty, and culture.)
I plan to fly into either Bangalore or Chennai and then head south,
Pondichery, down to Trichy and then fly over to Sri Lanka for two weeks, back to India, a week in Kerala relaxing before the wedding, then to Thrissor Poram festival for a day, followed by Mysor, then Bangalore and fly home.
So this trip will be a total of 5 weeks including Sri Lanka.
Is three weeks enough to see South India?
Is there anything significant to see between Bangalore and Chennai that I would miss by flying into Chennai and out of Bangalore?
I plan to travel mostly by overnight trains.
Also; how can I find out travel times between destinations in South India?
Thanks everyone!

Well, you won't see the entire southern portion of India in three weeks, but you can get a glimpse of the beauty that's there.

What time of the year will you be going there?

I recommend you skip Bangalore.

A few hours with a good guidebook will do wonders for your itinerary: I'm a Lonely Planet person, but there are also others. There is a separate LP guide for Southern India, which can be quite handy -- and they carry the info of "how long does it take?" between major places on your route.

Places in the south that I wouldn't want to miss: Mamallipuram, Pondichery, Trichy (lovely town), Madurai, Ramaswarm, Ooty, Mysore, Belur & Halebid (you can do these on a long day trip from Mysore).

You can do a decent tour of south india in 3 weeks, but what is your interest.

If you buy Outlook Travellers guides: Weekend trips out of Chennai & Kerala and Lakshadweep, there are quite a few good and doable suggestions depending on your interests.

Quite a bit of useful information is also available for free on their website:
http://traveller.outlookindia.com

As you are going to Trichy, do not miss the Ranganathaswamy temple complex in Srirangam, 7km away. In my opinion, it should be rated as a wonder of the world.

Also take a look at the Kerala and Tamil Nadu forums.
