South India Chennai - Cochin in 9 days

Hi there my husband and I are travelling to INdia for the fist time and have a limit of 9 days

. We are arriving at about 6am June 2nd in Chennai and departing early on June 11th from Cochin.

We want to see as much historical sights as we can but want to end with a bit of time to relax in Kerala. Am keen to travel via train though bus is an option. we are also looking at a low- mid budget range for accommodation but am happy to spend more if there is somewhere that is recommended.
Due to limited time we are keeping our trip within South India. If anyone has any ideas for an itinerary, accommodation or transport advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any recommendations for getting from place to place. Have been looking at the options of bus, taxi/ driver or train and am trying to work out which is the best option.

Tried and true. No worries. A/C new Ambassador. They'll pick you up at the airport and spend every moment with you. About 1700Rs per day excluding tolls, parking, bribery, etc.
