Somewhere between Delhi and Goa...

Good morning everyone!

I am new to the site (aside from lurking pre-shutdown ), and feel that you folks would have the best advice for me. My husband and I are planning our first trip to India in February 2007, and in planning our itinerary, we have about 4 days to spend somewhere between Delhi and Goa. We would like to start heading south at that point in the trip (We are going to do Bodhgaya and Darjeeling on another trip.). I was thinking Pune or Hampi or Ajanta... Anyone have any thoughts on these three or have any other suggestions for us?

Thanks in advance!

There are some gr8 planners here on IM so those 4 days would be more favoured at the beach, architecture, flora/fauna, or shopping?? ... or a little of each???

somewhere....

A beach isn’t necessary... seeing as Goa is the next place we are going, unless of course there is something that shouldnt be missed along the way, but architecture, flora/fauna etc would be great.

Udaipur is one possibility

You could spend 3 days in Udaipur (overningt in train from Delhi). The city has lakes, palaces and all the Rajasthani colors. You could then proceed to Goa via Ahmedabad (udaipur - Ahemadabad -3-4 hrs by road, ahmedabad -Goa abt 20 hrs by train)
Or you could move to Mount Abu from Udaipur (abt 4 hrs by road) and then next day morning catch the train from Abu Road to goa (about 24 hrs).

Udaipur is nice but Jodpur it's even nicer, check it on your LP.
By the way...don't miss Hampi, it really is a magic place, and if you like nature and quiet go and search for accomodation on the other side of the river, no cars there!

The hotel section here at IM lists some good choices at Udaipur - mahendra prakash, udai kothi.. If you want to get some royal treatment, Udaipur boasts of the 'one of the best' hotels in the world in the Lake palace hotel.

I agree hampi is lovely. As its about 10 hrs from Goa or 7 hrs from bagalore, it would suit your itenerary. Wouldn't realy advice to got Pune (nothing much there), or Ajanta (4 days are too much)
