Should I start in the north or the south?

I am planning to be in India for six months from Sept 08 and have managed to get a placement in a school in Kerala from Nov to the beginning of Jan 09. I've got about 6 weeks before I need to be there but now I am not sure where to start my trip.

I originally thought:

Fly into Mumbai, stay a day or two and then get the train to Goa
Spent 3 weeks in Goa
Take the train to Bangalore via Hampi for a week
Then a week in Mysore
Then a week in Cochin before heading out to the school

Which will leave me two months to do the North - Calcutta, Varanasi, Rajasthan and prob no time for a nip into Nepal.

But now I'm thinking:

Fly into Delhi for a day or two and then get the train to Jaipur
Spent 4 days in Jaipur and head to Jodhpur
spend 3 days in Jodhpur and head to Jaisalmer
spend 4 days in Jaisalmer and head to Udaipur
spend 3 days in Udaipur and head for Mumbai
spend 2 days in Mumbai then off to Goa
spend 2 weeks in Goa then off to Bangalore via Hampi
spend 1 week in Bangalore / hampi then head straight to Cochin / the school

That leaves me 2 months after the placement to get back upto the north for Calcutta, Varanasi and maybe Nepal before flying out via Delhi.

I have been to Delhi and Jaipur before but if I do Itinerary one am I doing enough to fill those six weeks?

Any suggestions would be most helpful

Yes, though you could think of adding Ajanta Ellora after Mumbai, and before Hampi/Goa.

Search this site for Ajanta, there are two pages of thread titles alone.

Here is one:

Elora/Ajanta caves....worth the trip?

Caution: old thread. The caves are older
