In shimlas case downtown would mean the bottom of the valley...
but assuming that you mean the city.... there are lots of options around mall road and on it as well..check the site for recommendations and advise on this issue. For a more 'intune with nature' i would recommend Potters Hill which is located in the middle of a reserve forest, tents and cottages, quite secluded. Is about 30 mins away from Shimla main town. Or you can go towards Naldehra / Mashobra as well , another area with reserver forests... a good options is Chalets Naldehra (just google for the site) Places around Shimla are plentiful as well, do a search on the site but some names - Chail, Fagu, Narkanda, Shoghi..

Peach Blossom has been recommended as good option by members. You could then check out Chail which is quite nice as well.

Other options around in Dalhousie are Mountview, Grandview and Lalji Resort all top end hotels. For medium budget try for Hotel Kumar and President |
